The Map of Thay, Bigger and Prettier! - Wids - 06-05-2012

Because Hellstrom requested it (after a little nudging from me, which was after I had used my map to direct him to the swamps west from the Keep of Sorrows), here's a nice complement to your character's Map of Thay, linked because it is a bit large for these forums:

Here

It's just something that I scribbled together to help keep me from getting lost during my overland travels. I've excluded Amruthar and all the other settlements and points of interest that don't yet exist in-game, but those can be added to the map later. Just place some kind of marker or token on the grid to represent your character's location and you're all set.

Disclaimer: This map and its creator--me--cannot be held responsible in the event that you get lost as a result of improper token placement, map jostling, computer desk jostling, clumsy fingers, clumsy elbows or panicking retreats from potentially fatal encounters. Remember to keep a clear and lucid head at all times while adventuring!

Tristella got kicked around by many Chosen Ones, Orc Savages and surprisingly powerful Ooze Mephits during the cartographical process which brought you this map. Be sure to thank her--and me--for that level of devotion by kindly giving her and Averlee any frightfully powerful magic items which you happen to find. You're welcome, and enjoy! :D

It's still a work in progress, many areas (especially east of Eltabbar and the northeast corner) need to be resurveyed for accuracy. I --his publisher-- have been dragging my feet in getting this posted for him. He told me I needed to hurry as there are now others who are taking up the surveyors plight and might beat him to the punch.

Here is the map that he has been using in his explorations.

Edit: Having doubted my initial depiction of the areas around Nethjet and Nethwatch Keep, I just now sent Tristella back up there to take another look. Sure enough, some of the blocked transitions which I had attributed to the Umber Sea were actually our beloved First Escarpment in action again. The map has been corrected accordingly. Because I care. Heart

I don't know what is more impressive;

The fact that you have charted the entire map.

Or the fact Thayan has built the server, to scale.

I'll go with both!

Awesome job Wids, great contribution to the forums here! I travel outdoors more than most (I think), and definitely know the routes between cities, but I couldn't picture the map as a whole until now.

Agreed - very, very impressive Wids.
Now, not to take away from the hard work you have done, but as Payne pointed out I did actually create the overland map to scale. I have long made the material/grid I used for it available to the staff. But now, since it appears 'the cat is out of the bag' thanks to Wids' hard work, I decided I may as well present it to everyone here. The nice thing about the current system is *all* overland travel areas are complete. However, since we don't have all cities or points of interest created yet, that makes 'holes' in the overland map, so I cannot just open up the entire map of Thay for exploration (yet).

Anyway though, here is the 'official' grid used for travel in Thay. It may be beneficial to print it out if you do alot of overland travel or you just like knowing where in the world you are. Maybe someone will even get ambitious and make a much prettier-looking one too. Regardless though - enjoy!

Thay Grid Overlay

You'll need Microsoft Excel or an equivlent to open the .xls file inside the archive. Note: OpenOffice Version 3.2 does not display the sheet correctly.

- The first map of Thay on the left side of the Thay Grid Overlay sheet is the one with the main grid overlay numbered, color-coded, and laying out what areas are accessible and what areas can/cannot be traveled to and from.

- Areas in white cannot be traveled to and essentially do not exist (they are either terrain that would normally be un-travel-able or outside the borders of Thay)

- Areas with a solid red line between them means travel between those areas is restricted

- For any areas that have travel restricted to them, there is descriptive text telling the person why they cannot travel further in a certain direction (it will tell them the Alamber Sea blocks their way, the First Escarpment is not scalable from their location, etc, etc).

- Areas with a double-red line around them are static areas (ones that are not generated by the overland travel system). These are mainly towns and cities; however there are a few ruins and other points of interest.

- The areas that make up the 11 Tharchs (regions) of Thay have been color-coded . For example, the Priador Tharch areas are all labeled with red numbers. The areas assigned to the Tharchs come from the layout of the Tharchs in the 3rd Edition Campaign Setting sourcebook for the Forgotten Realms (page 206).

I'll have to crack open that Excel file when I'm at work tonight. My home computer doesn't have Excel, my work computer does and thank Ptah for flash drives....

So will there eventually be more accessible areas added to the server? Presently, most of the server is set on the Priador, and there's a lot of ground to cover between the First and Second Escarpments. But the caravans have to be getting to Tyraturos and Eltabbar somehow, right? I wonder how many people would be needed to move that spiky log that's blocking the road up the High Road Escarpment.... ;)

Also, Escalant is an outlying city on the mouth of the River Laprendar, apparently not too far West or Northwest from Murbant. It's not part of Aglarond, and it's only loosely associated with Thay. Since Murbant isn't actually on the border between Thay and Aglarond, are there any plans to add Escalant to the server as well? I'm wondering what that city would actually be like; it got burned to the ground once and it was beseiged by fire elementals not too long ago, so I'm wondering if it might be a heavily walled (with walls of stone, no less) yet relatively primitive settlement like Thasselen is. :-/
