Slavery - Jechal - 10-31-2008

Overview
Slaves and slavery are a unique and complex element of the Thay PW. Once a PC has achieved a minimal amount of notoriety, they may find working for slave markets throughout the realm brings them a decent amount of coin and experience by bringing in new stock to trade or returning escaped slaves - including other PCs. As a PC grows in notoriety, they may eventually purchase a building or estate and use the slave markets to purchase slaves to maintain their property and land.

Slavery is not limited to monsters and NPCs alone. PCs must be careful or they will find themselves on the inside of the slave pens. Those not particularly notorious, non-human characters are in the most danger of being attacked by slavers. However, a 'protection' deal can be worked out with Slave Merchants for the right amount of coin.

Joining a faction, guild, temple, etc will reduce the frequency that slavers will attack the PC. But the slaver threat can never be completely eliminated for some races. However, by obtaining certain levels of power and notoriety, only the most desperate slavers will even consider making you their target. In addition, your mysterious allies *may* assist you early on if things get too difficult with slavers you encounter - however their assistance is limited to low level characters.

Finally, if you plan to step away from your computer for a short time, be sure to set your status as AFK so slavers do not ambush your character while you are gone.


PC Slavery Details
-New players, upon reaching level 2, will lose the temporary protection from slavers they receive due to the opening events. It is possible to buy this protection from any Slave Merchant, however the cost is not cheap, and increases with levels. Those with good people skills can, however get the Slave Merchant to give them protection for a level without requiring any money change hands

-If a new(er) arrival to Thay does get attacked and knocked down by slavers, there is a chance that their ‘mysterious allies’ from the opening event will intervene and save them, however this counts against your respawn attempts, and you will lose notoriety as if you had respawned.

-For PCs that get do captured and sent to the slave pits, you will have the options to convince the Old Slave there in to helping you escape. Note that all Guards and Legionnaires will be hostile to you if you do this since you will be considered an escaped slave. Plus, you’ll be in a remote area with access to only the escaped slave merchant that has less than top-notch items. Life will be very difficult for that PC.

-PC's can enslave other PCs if the enslaving PC has enough notoriety and is in comparable levels to the target PC. You *must* warn the other player via Tell of your PCs intention and change its status of theirs to Disliked/Hostile. It is requested that if the player does not wish their PC be made a slave, you respect their wishes. However enslavement is allowed without the other player’s permission, but be prepared to explain your reason why to a DM should they ask.

-For those with PC slaves, use your Slave Shackles on yourself for options to manage your PC slave.


General Slavery Details
-Once you've achieved the necessary notoriety, when you speak to a slave merchant you will be given the opportunity to become a slaver/work for the slavers and at that point you can buy a pair them from the merchant.

-Any humanoid creature that was originally hostile to you can be captured as a slave, as well as any escaped slaves you may find throughout Thay. So turn the tables on the slavers that come after you, capture Thugs roaming the streets of Bezantur, or if you have what it takes, you can even capture a Dryad or Minotaur as a slave!

-To capture any type of slave, the target creature must stay in the same spot for 30 seconds, so they will most likely need to be subdued or otherwise incapacitated first. And you can capture multiple NPC slaves at a time. The number you can capture and control at one time is based on your strength modifier; with a limit of three maximum, regardless of how strong you are.

-Shackled NPC slaves can be spoken to which allows their master to change their tactics. They also respond to voice commands such as ‘Follow’, ‘Stand Your Ground’, and ‘Attack Nearest’. While they can fight for you, sooner or later they will break free of their shackles and escape. So if you intend to sell them, get to a Slave market soon after capturing them.

-You can speak to any of the various Slave Merchants in Thay to sell your PC or NPC slaves. In order to sell any slave however, they must all be within 10 meters of you.

Updated and revised on 9/26/11.

For clarification; nothing with the slavery system has recently changed. However, I wanted to cosolidate the information about the slavery system. In addition, I also want to draw attention to the PC Slavery Details section of this thread for players who are especially afraid of their new PC somehow getting enslaved: there are ways (possibly even free) that you can basically 'opt out' of the slavery system for a PC by having it speak to the NPC Slave Merchants.

Due to some troubleshooting for issues related to releasing a slave, a change has been made when a PC is enslaving another creature which will take effect with the next server reset after this post -

Now, when shackles are used to enslave a creature, the GUI will disappear for a short time and the PC will move to focus solely on shackling the creature. This means you will want to make sure the area around your PC is secure before attempting to shackle a creature as you will no longer have the ability to unrealistically keep fighting, or do something else while your PC is supposedly putting shackles on someone/something.
