After-action report to the Matron - DarkRanger - 12-29-2013

I arrived in Pyarados, early afternoon, and departed with the Pyarados Captain's group an hour or 2 after. The plan, to exploit their horse archery tactics by holding a line at the entrance to Shar's pass, setting them up for aerial spell bombardment by the griffon legion, seemed to work, however they had managed to spot the griffons from their hilltop position, and laid a trap of their own, catching us all in the middle of their ranks. The Captain called for all to retreat, and I managed to escape alongside a Priador legionairre. On our way back to Pyarados, we ran into one of their sergants searching for survivors, and joined him in heading back towards the pass. After defeating a medium sized scouting party, we entered the pass searching for the Captain, or the Tharchion's nephew. Eventually we ran into their main force and retreated, I can't remember how I escaped but Blackfrost didn't make it.
After engaging this enemy twice, I can make the following observations. One, their horse archery tactics multiply their power against both standard infantry and cavalry tactics. Two, their riding formation is such that it's impossible to tell how many you're facing until you're engaged in melee with them, they need to be flanked. I recommend committing our best drow archers to the Zulkir's forces, to counter their tactics and provide the mobility needed to flank them.

Signed,
Lieutenant Mirella Locke
