Assassination - Axdec - 10-30-2008 Assassination is a way of life in Thay. In most countries assassins are shunned and hide their activities, but in Thay guilds of assassin’s thrive and are actively sought out. As individuals become more notorious, the frequency of assassination attempts on them will increase as more powerful rivals and enemies are made. Anyone with more to lose than just equipment and gold would do well to ensure they have guards, troops, and spies in place to help thwart at least some of the attempts on their life. On the other hand, those with nothing to lose, these who enjoy the risk, money, or just the taking of lives can find quick employment working with local assassins to perform hits. Perhaps not too ironically, even assassins must become more wary of attempts on their lives as they grow in power and/or notoriety, as well. ========================== Assassins (at least those generated by the assassination system) will not begin to bother with PCs until the character has reached a moderate level of notoriety. Once a PC has become notorious enough that slavers should not be attacking them anymore, they should then become wary of assassins taking the place of slavers. The frequency, chance, and difficulty of assassination attempts depend on a variety of factors. For instance, good-aligned characters will have a better chance that assassins may come after them, as well as the assassins being more difficult. Paladins will find the difficulty and deadliness of assassination attempts increasing even more than other good-aligned characters. Another example is those who fail or reject the Red Wizard Apprentice trials will also see the difficulty and frequency of assassin contracts on them increase considerably. Perhaps not as a big surprise, those who join the Red Wizards (or any other faction) will also have a better chance of assassins attacking them. There is always some faction rival -or rival faction- in Thay who would like to see a rising star knocked down a few notches. |
