Legionnare's Having Merchants - Purulent Carcass - 03-03-2014

A long time ago, KTA told me that legionnare's aren't supposed to have merchants. I was asked recently if they could, and didn't see anywhere that said they weren't supposed to. Found out they can in fact get a license so I wondered if there was a rule about this somewhere and I am not seeing it?

The rule has always been faction leaders, so tribunes, high priests, etc. can own merchants.

Wow.. really? I always thought merchant was a faction of it's own. Only merchants and RW's could have a merchant license.. or the faction leader but since no active PC makes faction leader then only merchants and RWs should get a merchant license.

Now I'm all confused.

Its true. Anyone can have one. My older characters Avrora lay person of Oghma could have one and so could Azura of the legion
and also my current character Caramiriel.

Why limit to the leaders? I see no conflict. Selling stuff can be a bear and usally most factions go to their qm or faction store.
Once it is sold it gets lost after reset. Allow a legionairre to have the merchant to sell some of the higher end for others to use.
This way the legionnairres get some extra cash and players access to gear.

There is one problem with everyone having a merchant though, that is that if very character on the server had a merchant standing around.
If we presume we have a good 20-25 people with three characters each, then that could quickly come up to 60-75 merchants. I would personally rather see dedicated merchants that either have their own faction, or are members of the Mercenary/Merchant one to be the only ones with player merchants.

--Also Thayan Knights are not allowed to have player-merchants as it is, as the only ones I guess, though I count that as a good thing.

Well its not like every player has a pc who is a faction leader and one that even wants to own a merchant at that.

One of the benefits to being a legionnaire is that legionnaires get to sell things to their legion quarter-masters, and only legionnaires can sell to those quartermasters. Thus they are ensured a greater likelihood of being able to sell their loot.

Right now, only those with a merchants license can sell their loot to the merchant masters as one of the benefits of being a dedicated merchant, but if legionnaires can get a license too I can only forecast that merchants will have to compete with legionnaire-merchants for that resource that is supposed to be a benefit for straight merchants.

Now, with my merchant character I've been trying to be respectful of all the non-merchants and newer characters on the server by offering the best deals I can at my shop, and by utilizing the merchant masters to sell loot and unwanted goods dumped into my shop by some players. I do it so that the publicly available merchants don't run out of gold for those who are not merchants, legionnaires, Red Wizard's, or Red Wizard apprentices (all of whom have their own faction related 'merchants' to sell goods too).

I'm fairly certain WE ALL HATE going from merchant to merchant (sometimes having to go to far-away places) trying to find one that has gold left to buy our unwanted items.

I say let Legionnaires use their quartermasters, and let merchants use their merchant masters, and neither one have access to the others. But that's just my own personal opinion.

RE: Legionnare's Having Merchants - Sundraoi - 03-03-2014

If everyone can have a merchant, than why even have a merchant faction? To me, having a merchant license means you are of the merchant "faction". Your career is that of a merchant.. not a legionnaire, not a cleric, not a member of some other faction. In fact, when you are released from the beggar and he sends you to speak with that woman (can't remember her name) she tells you your options... a legion/temple/guild, Red Wizard OR mercenary/merchant. She does not say join a faction then go get a merchant too and have the best of both worlds. Not to mention letting faction members have merchants takes from the merchant's role. Those who have items they wish to sell for more than their QMs or NPC merchants will give should find a PC merchant and make arrangements to meet and sell to them for a higher price.. or arrange a trade if they have something you desire in their inventory.

The merchant master tells you that specifically that faction leaders are allowed to earn merchants. I know it has been that way since I started 3+ years ago,

The rules that keep being referred to here can be found here: http://thaypw.org/showthread.php?tid=23
