Cube vs. Cube* - Wids - 07-07-2014

So lately I've gotten to wondering which of Thay's polyhedral oozes is more fearsome and more formidable: is it the aballin, or is it the gelatinous cube?

A not-necessarily-complete comparison goes here:

The Aballin
• Starts showing up around Level 4-5
• Deals combined Acid and Bludgeoning damage
• Engulfs and paralyzes people
• Seems to engulf and paralyze people more often than the gelatinous cube does
• About half the size of a gelatinous cube; less likely to get stuck on terrain, but easier to run past
• Usually fast and difficult to outrun
• Often goes into Stealth Mode
• Can't open doors
• Zelis gets the taste slapped out of her mouth whenever she tries to melee an aballin

The Gelatinous Cube
• Starts showing up around Level 6-7
• Deals combined Acid and Bludgeoning damage
• Engulfs and paralyzes people
• Seems to engulf and paralyze people less often than the aballin does
• About twice the size of an aballin; harder (or, in corridors, impossible) to run past, but more likely to get stuck on terrain
• Usually slow and easy to outrun
• Rarely, if ever, goes into Stealth Mode
Can open doors
• Zelis goes toe-to-toe with gelatinous cubes and eats them alive on a routine basis ;)

* Yes, I know. Aballins aren't remotely cubelike in tabletop D&D. Ours is but to work with whatever Neverwinter Nights gives us. Now hush. :P

And if you have any information to enhance these run-down lists, then feel free to step up and contribute. Information is the grist of many a debate, after all.

So which of the two cubes does a better job of scaring the hell out of you? It's poll time!

Arrgh! Must...edit...poll options! :@

*pities Mr. Carcass* :D

*meanwhile, clamps the electrodes onto this hatchling conversation's ears and throws the power switch....*

What about the "I fear both forms of jello, they leave me quivering in my boots like like like... jello" option? :)

I wanna know what you have against Jello?!

Oh, yeah. I guess I forgot to include that fourth option, aka. the "I'm equally terrified of both, so I'm going to curl into a fetal ball on the floor so they both can share me like that plate of spaghetti in Lady and the Tramp, and maybe my death will be relatively swift and painless that way" option. My bad. :D

So how many souls does Bill Cosby devour now that he's pushing a hundred, anyway? :-/

Animayhem, you pitiful coward! Either overcome your mounting terror and face the Dread Cubes of Ooze in glorious battle, or be an embarrassment to your ancestors forever!

( :D )

RE: Cube vs. Cube* - Animayhem - 07-09-2014

Heh been there done that with all the gelatinous cubes.

I have assisted in saving others from that fate. :)

I once played on a place that did not have those as a normal creature to fight, but it was a trademark creature of a dm.

Was that DM named Falcifer, by any chance? I remember him from Prisoners of the Mist and The Way Inn. He has a thing for gelatinous cubes. He even claimed to have rolled up a gelatinous cube paladin for a tabletop campaign once...somehow. Huh

Nope :) this Dm's name was Heavy Metal

Oh, okay. I reckon I don't know that one. Blush
