I have a quest that needs me to go to High Thay Gold mines! I have no idea where that is if anyone is kind enough to give me directions!

It's in the ass end of nowhere. Find the item they're asking you for at an easier to locate store and purchase it there or give up the quest. Trust me. That place is tough.

Also you can by a map of thay or an atlas.

Don't be afraid to ask someone else for directions in game, especially if you're going to Eltabbar.
