Idea - NPC Dialog, Forign Language - TheShadowEntity - 12-09-2014

I noticed how some NPC's (Orcs and gnoll's) have very generic dialog which amounts to either "Growls something" or "grunts something".

My idea is to have them open an actual dialog (like the other NPC's) if you know either Gnollish or Orcish.

I believe that gnolls speak Goblinish. But I have seen servers do things like this before; on Pirate Isles, there was a merfolk merchant in the Undersea who only spoke Aquan, so only characters who spoke Aquan could trade with him. And apparently my Cleric of Umberlee was the only PC on the server who spoke Aquan, because other characters would come up to her while she was doing her usual thing of throwing gems into the surf. "Hey, Serrica. We're off to visit that merman riding the hippocampus. Can you come with us?" There was also an old dwarven tomb with inscriptions which characters could only read if they knew the Dwarven tongue, and a giant's tomb with inscriptions which characters could only read if they knew Jotun/Giantish/whatever. It was pretty neat.

Gnolls are supposed to speak there own language. I think the goblin speak problem arose from early language systems not supporting many languages; as many servers have that effect despite the MM being specific as to there language.

Very well.

It would be nice. But if not if maybe they could to told to "Get the Hell away" like other npcs - for gnolls, orcs and gobs

Yes, please. If I had a Talon for every time a big, chunky gnoll has planted himself right between Corella and whichever random townie she's proselytizing to....

But gnolls are probably testy enough to take it personally, and then it's fight time. How much XP is a townie gnoll worth, I wonder? :P

It would be neat if there where books that you could only read if you know the language, and inscriptions in dungeons.

Languages are still good if you want to identify other characters of your sort, or if you want to hold a conversation without picking up any eavesdroppers nearby. But yes, it would be neat for certain languages to unlock a few doors like that. Unless that language is something really rare or obscure, like Thri-Kreen. Honestly, does anybody on this server speak Thri-Kreen? Or Psionic? Or maybe even Alzhedo? :P
