How do you SAY your name? - TheShadowEntity - 12-13-2014

I thought this would be a good idea since not all names actually follow standard English convention. So.... How do you SAY your PC's name?

Sila - Is pronounced as Sela

RE: How do you SAY your name? - Wids - 12-13-2014

Too many tabletop players giving their characters names with counterintuitive pronunciations have taught me well the value of avoiding counterintuitive pronunciations. ("jel-leh-BRET-soss?" "No. Ghel-BRETZ-iss." "So...ghel-lee-BRET-soass?" "Ghel-BRETZ-iss." *looking right at "Gellebretsos" and shaking my head*)

So Corella is kor-EL-luh or kor-EL-lah, Wyren is WIE-ren, Zelis is ZEE-liss and, when I feel like playing something different, Karshag is KARR-shag. And forever shall it be so, amen. :P

Korina Vercingetorix (/ˌvɜrsɪnˈdʒɛtərɪks/ vur-sin-jet-ə-riks or /ˌvɜrsɪŋˈɡɛtərɪks/ vur-sing-get-ə-riks; Latin pronunciation: [werkiŋˈɡetoriːks]; c. 82 BC – 46 BC)

I *think* that all my characters names *are* standard English pronunciation, of course that's *my* standard English pronunciation (a classically educated American Southerner), and not, say "The Queen's English" but otherwise, here goes:

My wizard: HAZ-lock THRUNE

My cleric: Au-TOR-ee-an da-GRIM

My monk: AR-chee-bold MONT-feh-raa-tu

My rogue: DRAKE WHENT

MoreThanThree, I'd be glad to see what you could come up with in IPA for my characters, as I haven't a clue on how to proceed about that...

I feel like both of mine are pretty straightforward, but then again, perhaps not.

Alek Kelter - A-lek KEL-ter.

Fun fact - I initially had a different surname planned for him but when I went to name him it had randomly generated Kelter and I liked the way the two names flowed together. Like it's almost one word. Toss in a random apostrophe and you've got a good name for an Outsider. Alekel'Ter.

Killian Surkov - KILL-eean SUR-kov. Opposite here, had initially randomly generated Swift as a last name, but when the server crashed I changed that - partially because I wanted a Damaran name to reflect the whole "Mutt of Thesk" thing, partially because "Killian Swift" sounds way too much like a Stereotypical Fantasy Name. It always made me feel like my RP should be things like me telling people that I give them the feeling that my character could disembowel them in a second - never mind the fact that they're a level 18 Fighter and he's a level 6 Rogue.

Though if we were to butcher it into "english phonetics", her name would be, "Core-een-uh Vare-seen-get-or-icks".

You forgot the all-caps stressy bits. :P

You will use your phoenetics and you will like them. Ain't no one got time for that IPA moonspeak. :P
