Cedric's Sunset - Balanor - 01-20-2011 Cedric the Red Wizard was not prone to being moved by beauty. On this day though, for some odd reason, he couldn’t help himself. Gazing at the gorgeous sunset of red, pink, yellow, with a touch of purple was truly one of the most magnificent things he had ever seen. Even the party of adventurers behind him seemed to think so as they stopped at the entrance to the Thasselen crypts. He overheard some murmuring about the beauty of the sunset, and he tore his gaze away from the horizon to look at them as its fiery glow lit up their faces. It was one of the largest parties preparing to enter the crypts he had observed in his considerable time wandering the Thasselen cemetery. He resisted the urge to ask them for Skeleton Knuckles and studied them carefully. They cast numerous spells and the warriors among them looked hardened and well seasoned. A dark leather-clad woman entered the crypt first; seemingly oblivious to the sunset that even he himself had been drawn to. The rest consisted of a Red Wizardess, and maybe her apprentice? Next was a dwarf legionnaire bearing the cloak of the Alaor marines and a tall and strong woman, clad in heavy armor from head to toe and carrying a clearly powerful -and large- magic sword. The front line, he assumed. The two other women looked less than imposing - one with simple leathers and crossbow but with an almost enchanting voice when she spoke, and another who -while well dressed- didn’t quite seem sure of herself as she hovered around the apprentice. His gaze lingered at the scar over her eye. “Damaged goods,” he thought “but they all seem capable enough.” As the sun sank below the horizon and dusk grew to night, the party entered the Thasselen Crypts as many others had done before them. A week later, Cedric still couldn’t stop thinking about that party which had never returned. However when he closed his eyes and imagined the last sunset they had seen, a small bit of warmth crept into his cold heart and he couldn’t help but smile ever so slightly. At least they had quite the sendoff before their deaths, almost as if the gods themselves had known. ------------------------ My sincere thanks to everyone who participated in last night’s Wheels in Motion campaign event - it was one of the most fun I have ever had. Cedric’s Sunset is a tribute to these brave players - Karilynn, KTA, Purulent Carcass, Suicre, Fenriloftheice, Githzerai Monk, and Saibotxor And as a wise wizard once told me, “Death is not the end, just another path. One which we all must take...” |
