Thay / Rashemen - Payne - 04-19-2011

Settle a debate I am having with someone.

Would a Thayan not hate any Rashemi?

This other says this planned char, is not a sorcerer but wizard and would be accepted to become a Red Wizard if he/she proved themselves.

Figured this would be -the- place for this answer.

:)

The two "native" ethnicities of Thay are Rashemi and Mulan. The Rashemi of Thay constitute a middle class of primarily craftsmen, traders and such. Their numbers rival those of the Mulan, but they are lower in the social heirarchy, but higher than nonhumans and somewhat more prominent than other non-Mulan ethnicities. Thayan Rashemi are shorter than Rashemen Rashemi, and usually copy Mulan social conventions (such as having very short hair and bearing tatoos) and think of themselves more as Thayans than Rashemi and the Rashemi of Rashemen think they are weak for "accepting Thayan slavery" without ever trying to break the bonds.

Only Mulan can become Red Wizards, that is the official policy. Non-Mulan Red Wizards have a very hard time, though they are not unheard of if a powerful enough Red Wizard decides to adopt a non-Mulan human as an apprentice, but this is very rare and does not happen more often for Rashemi than any other human ethnicities, apart from the obvious reasoning of there simply being more Rashemi in Thay and therefore possibly more to prove themselves. One should never count on the goodwill of Thayans, though.

Furthermore, Rashemen Rashemi have all sorts of social conventions for magic which is increadibly Byzantine and complicated in and off itself, but that is another story.
So bottom line, no, a Thayan does not necessarily hate a Rashemi, since ethnic Rashemi constitute part of the majority ethnicities. A Thayan would probably hate the country Rashemen, and citizens from Rashemen, but not all Rashemi are citizens of Rashemen. Many of the individuals holding the worst spite for the country of Rashemen are Thayan Rashemi.

Thayan Rashemi and Rashemen Rashemi are usually not on friendly terms. Thayan Mulan and Mulhorandi Mulan have better relations.
