The Tharchion of Delhumide
#1
Throughout Thay, especially Delhumide and the northern tharchs, it is well known that the former tharchion of Delhumide, Mikal Canos, has been missing for many months after investigating rumors of a powerful artifact in the Ruins of Delhumide. Within the last week, the zulkir council finally met and selected a tribune of the Delhumide legion, Invarri Metran, to replace him as tharchion of Delhumide.

One of Metran’s first decrees was to order his legion out of the ruins, and only to patrol along its edges to keep any horrors within its broken skeleton contained. Otherwise, business continues much as normal in the tharch that contains the greatest reminder of what happens to those who defy the Red Wizards.

-------------------------------------------------

Invarri Metran smiled grimly as yet another annoying noble from some distant ranch in his tharch came to pay homage to the newest tharchion of Thay. Looking down at the kneeling man in front of his throne in the Tharchion’s Palace of Umratharos, Tharchion Metran of Delhumide (gods he loved the sound of that) nodded once and bade the kneeling man to rise, then listened half-heartedly as the man began to drone on about something or other.

As he often did since the zulkirs voted on his ascension, his thoughts returned to his predecessor, Mikal Canos. Mikal was the brother of Thessaloni Canos, tharchioness of the Alaor Isles. Together, they had helped elevate the Canos family to one of the most powerful in Thay who did not have a zulkir to claim as their own. It wasn’t that either was necessarily a bad tharchion -from a Thayan point of view- it’s just that all that power made for some powerful enemies.

That, plus Mikal’s insatiable desire to explore the Ruins of Delhumide, had been his undoing. Metran smiled grimly, much to the droning noble’s delight, as he recalled how his carefully laid plan and ambush unfolded which led to the ‘disappearance’, and presumed death, of Mikal in the Ruins of Delhumide almost four months ago. But the smile quickly faded away as he then equally recalled how he had been betrayed by the Temple of Tiamat, and the pawns of the temple that they had used to elevate him to this position were still very much alive.

Mikal Canos, for all intents in purposes, was dead and would remain that way. And should those who know the truth show their faces in Umratharos again, he resolved he would be assured of their permanent silence in that regard.

-------------------------------------------------

Through the divining pool in the Temple of Tiamat, the Masked One, along with the Horn of the Black Beast -the high priestess of the temple- watched Metran on his throne in the great hall of the Tharchion’s Palace in Umratharos.

“You have done well,” the Masked One murmured softly to the priestess. “Multiple objectives accomplished in one fell swoop. Your cleverness is to be applauded.”

“I appreciate your approval,” stated the Horn, sounding like she didn’t care a wit what the powerful archmage liked or disliked.

After a moment the Masked One turned to her, waved away the image in the pool, and stated “Let me explain, again, that we have selected these new allies of your temple for a very grandiose purpose. You and Tiamat’s faithful putting them on the track to find that tome and begin the process of establishing a powerful cult cell here in Thay was of the utmost importance. It is to counter fire with fire. It is to counter the undead power that even the zulkirs are afraid to stand against, with an even more powerful undead power of our own devising.

“Continue to work with this emerging Cult cell. Aid them, and I have no doubt they will aid you when the time comes. As will other Shadows, whether they realize it or not. You are an integral part of our master plan. Do this, and see Tiamat’s power spread throughout this land.

“And as your power grows, so too will the Shadows.”
