Captain Ryech Voralt, Protector of Bezantur, walked with a determined stride from the Citadel of Corrections to the slave pens. In his hand was the end of a chain connected to the shackle around the neck of a woman. The woman's hair hung in scraggly ropes from her head and she was emaciated from months in the Citadel. Her naked body, caked with dirt and blood, was covered in horribe scars from the many tortures she withstood. He dragged her, stumbling and staggering, to a cage in the pit where he chained her.
Anastasia Shadoe was sent to gather the citizens of Bezantur for a public execution. Captain Voralt summoned them all to the pit. Once they were all gathered, he announced that the prisoner, Wersha Slaavos, was to be publicly and painfully executed for crimes against Bezantur. First, however, there were a few in attendance who had private disputes to settle with the prisoner. Each was called forward; Ana, Rand and Heather, each seperately, was called forward to face the condemned. As each was called, Wersha seemed to taunt them more and more. None would rise to the bait and kill her quickly.
Soon, it was Captain Voralt's turn to carry out the sentence. He stood in the middle of the pit and in a clear voice that reverberated off the walls of the Citadel, announced the charges against the woman. Wersha Slaavos was condemned to die for the murders of 100 citizens of Bezantur, for refusing to obey the orders set forth to her as a legionnaire and for being a lycan. He turned to the people gathered and asked if there were any present who would dispute this sentence. When none answered, he turned and told Wersha she had no one. Her reply is what she would answer to her death... "I have Malar."
Captain Voralt set at her with a whip, reviving her a few times to ask her to repeat herself and to draw out the pain. Each time, she answered the same, "I have Malar," spitting in his face once.
The last time he revived her and asked her the question, she answered with words garbled by the blood in her mouth from biting her tongue to hold back the screams. "I have Malar," she said and she spat blood in Captain Voralt's face in defiance. The Protector stepped back and raised his whip. "He will not have you. Goodbye Wersha," was all he said as he began whipping her to death. The cracks of the whip and the rending of flesh as the whip met bare skin echoed throughout the slave pens and market. When Captain Voralt was finished, he bent down and lifted Wersha's head by her hair. Satisfied she was dead, he let it fall back to the blood soaked ground and walked back to the center of the pit. He scanned the crowd, making certain he had the attention of all present, then once again voiced the decree set down regarding lycans in Bezantur.
