House Thrune was a pureblood Mulani family known for its production of Conjurers. Those who know the family say their patronage of the Temple of Gargauth in Bezantur was well established. Hazlok's aunt, Abrogail Thrune, who would go on to marry into another prominent Mulani family once served as a priestess of that Temple. Hazlok's grandfather, the family's previous patriarch, Red Wizard of Conjuration, Ethric Thrune, was known to be particularly ambitious, even for a Red Wizard, until his mysterious death.

Hazlok himself was considered the black sheep of the family. His eldest brother was selected by the family patriarch, his grandfather, to be his own apprentice. Even his younger siblings were chosen by the Red Wizards of the College of Conjuration to be trained in the ways of wizardry. Not selected for an apprenticeship like his brothers and sisters, it was not until the death of his grandfather (his father having passed away prior) that he took up study of the Art. Joining the College of Necromancy, in spite of the family's traditions, further cemented his position as the black sheep in the family, being cast out of their ancestral home by his nephew, Devron Thrune, current head of the family.

Moving to Tyraturos, he was assaulted by slavers and nearly captured but for the aid of a mysterious ally. Setting up shop in a dead gnoll's former tavern as his arcane practice room during the Time of Troubles, Hazlok gains the attentions of the Red Wizards, and comes to Apprentice with Master Baristin Ampharel. He originally had an ice mephit by the name of Mr. Mephit as his familiar. After he became an Apprentice, he took a new familiar, an Imp he calls Lord Imperious.

When traveling outside of Tyraturos, he is often in the company of Rahzim Desselath, a Mulani Legionnaire from the Tharch of Eltabbar. Locals in Tyraturos have also seen him in the company of a young tiefling. When in Bezantur, he has been seen at the Dusk worship services of the Temple of Myrkul.

An otherwise humble wizard by all accounts, Hazlok has taken to calling himself Senior Apprentice, and any of his fellow apprentices who argue with this title have a tendency to end up dead. Whether this amuses his Master or not is unknown...

Since the End of the Time of Troubles, Hazlok has moved out of the apartment over the Tyraturos library. He has been seen gathering allies, leading various ventures, and studying his spellbook outside an Old Tower in the southeast corner of Central Tyraturos.

Now a Master of Thay, Hazlok the Red has hired a Mulani merchant named Rennie Cain, to sell enchanted goods out of a stall in the Courtyard of the Temple of Waukeen. He has been seen scouring the countryside for objects of interest that he might add to either his personal collection, or lesser objects he might sell to those with the coin to afford them...

Hazlok has acquired a tower in Tyraturos, which those who pass by the tower have noticed that vines have begun to creep up the tower at an unusually swift pace. It is rumored that the former native son of Tyraturos, and Legion Lieutenant, Adio Pasha, has became a Knight in Master Thrune's service, and is seen coming and going from the tower, along with a Rashemi woman who some say is "the Master's servant"

Some say he has been heard referring to himself as "The Red Wizard of Tyraturos", and leading investigations into the tower of the former holder of that title, the missing Red Wizard Dillomat, though for what ultimate goal is unknown...
