Arrival of the Horde

Hezass Nymar prided himself on being a practical man. Let others perish with their convictions, he was a survivor who took advantage of the slightest change in the wind. Loyalty to himself above all others. That was his motto. And when the time had come, now decades ago when he was a young man saved from slavers, he had readily accepted the aid 'offered' by his saviors. Not that they really gave him much of a choice, but still, their aid had saved him time and again when he should have fallen or failed despite his best efforts. He sometimes even wondered if the entire affair had been manufactured by his 'mysterious allies' simply as a way to try and force his allegiance to them.

Be that as it may, through the second chances and beyond that they had afforded him, he had become a Kossuthan priest of some power in Thay. But more impressively, riding the wave of pro-Firelord sentiment that swept through Thay in the wake of the Salamander War, he was selected by none other than the powerful Szass Tam himself to rule the Lapendrar tharch after Tharchion Tenslayer perished during the ill-advised war. How he had managed that was a secret he would guard with his life, although he strongly suspected the hand of his 'mysterious allies' played a big part in it.

So when the near-mythical Masked One had been waiting in his chambers of the Heirarch's Palace in Amruthar immediately following his coronation as tharchion, he knew the time had come to begin repayment on the debt he owed his saviors. Now, almost two years later, the Masked One and he were back in the same chambers yet again.

"How," he asked after his moment of reverie had passed and he was back in the present "Does this benefit me or the Lapendrar tharch? I could care less about Pyarados, but it sounds like you want the Tuigans to overrun all of Thay which is decidedly bad for me and my aspirations."

The Masked One hissed his displeasure in a sigh. "You are not meant to understand. The big picture, however, will benefit Thay and our plans here - which is what you *should* be concerned with. You have the resources I need to deal with the keep, which is what we need. See that you do so. NOW."

Hezass glowered at empty chair for a time after the Masked One left. Then the headache started to return, reminding him of his obligation. For the hundredth time again he prayed to Kossuth to remove the geas, and all he got in answer was a pounding migraine. Holding his head in his hands, he stood shakily, cursing his saviors.

The Horselords would soon arrive, and the horde would not be able to sweep into Thay unless he did as commanded.

This is yet another new campaign brought to you by Thayan and your DM team! It will be an open campaign, which will be comprised of around 6-8 events held during the next 3-4 weeks (so relatively short, by my standards!).

If you wish to join most (or all) of the events, I suggest joining an announced event with a PC in the level 8-12 range. Since there will be some combat-heavy events coming up, those events will be targeted for PCs within that range to make sure the battles aren’t too lopsided. However you don’t need to attend all events to participate in this campaign. So if you have a PC outside of that range you want to join the event, feel free to do so if I haven’t specified any level restriction for the event.

The first event for this campaign will be held this Tuesday, December 10, at 7:00 PM CST. This event will be open to all, but as there will likely be some combat, I’d recommend using a PC close to the level 8-12 range.

Due to the great turnout we've been seeing recently, I feel the need to give advance warning I may have to limit the number of players that can be in some of these events. Large groups of characters make it difficult for everyone involved to really enjoy the event (even the DM(s) running it), especially when there is supposed to be a fair amount of RP rather than combat situations.

Therefore, for tonight's event, I will be limiting the number of characters in it to approximately 8 or so. Characters within the level 8-12 range will get first priority, and then I'll move out to characters outside of, but close to, that level range, and so on until we have ~8 that can make the party. If we have more than the ~8 characters in the 8-12 range that would like to be involved in this event, I'll be asking everyone to break out their 100-sided dice (typing !dice in game), and those people that roll the highest will be the ones selected to join the event.

I apologize in advance for this 'pick the shortest straw' method and the disappointment this may cause to the people who don't get in. However, I will keep a list of those people who do not make certain events so for future events everyone who would like to participate gets at least a couple chances to do so.

You overhear news that in Pyarados a unit of the Pyarados Legion, known as Shar's Kiss, is being mobilized to march on a small village to the north of the city that has failed to provide appropriate taxes to the tharchion, Valerios Theokillos. Meanwhile Theokillos, an old adventure himself, has a penchant for utilizing the services of the many adventurers who pass through his city on their way to the Sunrise Mountains or Kepetur ruins. He has indicated through his autharchs that he is interested in hiring or utilizing adventurers to help supplement this unit of 1500 soldiers as scouts and outriders, and may have a special mission for them as part of the expedition.

Any interested should present themselves at the Tharchion's Fortress in Pyarados.

The next event related to this campaign will be held tomorrow, December 14, at 4:00 PM CST. Everyone is welcome to join if there is an IC reason your character would be interested in joining the advance guard for the Pyarados Legion unit being send on this expedition.

You overhear news that in Pyarados the Thazar Keep has simply disappeared, leaving Shar's Pass and Thazar Pass unguarded. Monsters such as giants, ogres, and even dragons have been coming down from the mountains in droves. Bands have been sent to investigate and it is said the tharchion has sought the aid of the Red Wizards, but so far the pass has been unguarded for well over a month now.

In addition, despite a last ditch attempt at diplomacy, or deception, by the leaders of the small village, the unit of the Pyarados Legion, known as Shar's Kiss, is being marching on the village to the north of the city that has still failed to provide appropriate taxes to the tharchion. Adventurers are being sought by the tharchion and the legion to assist with the expedition that has now become extremely dangerous with hordes of Sunrise Mountains monsters roving the tharch.

Any interested should present themselves at the Tharchion's Fortress in Pyarados.

The next event related to this campaign will be held Saturday, December 21, at 5:00 PM CST. Everyone is welcome to join if there is an IC reason your character would be interested in joining this expedition.

Pyarados scouts positioned on the far side of Thazar return to Pyarados in a frenzy bringing news that a new force of at least several thousand of the horselord barbarians are advancing through the pass once again. It is obvious that these are no ordinary and unorganized bandits, but an army intent on invading Thay! Not since ill-fated invasion of Halacar of Aglarond in 1260 DR, 99 years ago, has Thay faced the threat of invasion. But most in Thay appear confident that the barbarian threat will meet the same fate as Halacar's army and be destroyed as well.

Pyarados is now a frenzy of activity as the legion is being mustered and battleplans are being prepared to defend Thay itself from invasion. The Thrachion himself is working closely with the Red Wizards to try and ensure a quick victory. While no summons have gone out for mercenary assistance this time, Pyarados and the Tharchion's Fortress is still bustling with adventurers and cutthroats seeking to make a profit off of this 'war' - if it can be called that.

The next event related to this campaign will be held tomorrow on Sunday, December 29, at 3:00 PM CST.
This event *will* be limited to no more than 10 players. IC explanations and reasons will be developed to remove those who don't fit into the battleplans and in a worst-case scenario, the d100 roll will decide who makes the cut. Since this is probably the most important event of this campaign, those who do not make the cut will be given an IC option to watch as an invisible/undetectable spectator in a type of out-of-body experience, courtesy of the mysterious allies. It may not be as much fun as actually being selected, but at least you'll get to witness the events unfold firsthand.

Once again, my apologies up front to any who plan to join tomorrow but end up not getting selected.

The Pyarados Legion has been defeated and the Griffon Legion annihilated! Against a smaller force, the legions of Pyarados including the Griffon Legion, led by the tharchion's nephew Gavros Mediocros suffered a crushing loss. Gavros and most of his command did not survive a cunning ambush laid by the enemy general. Survivors of the battle have been filtering westward for days bringing news of the defeat.

But hope remains!

Almost as soon as word was received of the loss in the Battle of the Griffon Legion, Szass Tam himself decided to take action. It is rumored that Yaphll, the zulkir of divination, and he are heavily involved in developing a new plan to stop the barbarians. Szass Tam and the zulkir council call upon all Thayans and all those loyal to Thay, in all tharchs, legions, and factions, to join a new force being assembled in Pyarados that he will personally lead to stop the invading horde.

Already hundreds of Red Wizards and Thayan Knights, thousands of legionnaires from all tharchs, various mercenaries, and even temple and guild guards and their members have made their way to Thay's eastern-most tharch. Surely with such a force of tens of thousands, the remaining horselords will simply flee back to their grasslands rather than stand and be annihilated themselves...

The next event related to this campaign will be held tomorrow, December 30, at 7:00 PM CST. Any and everyone is welcome to join if your PC would heed the call to arms.

The final event for this campaign will be held tomorrow, January 4, at 7:00 PM CST. Any and everyone is welcome to join even though there will likely be a fair amount of combat (we have a plan for how we'll get low-levels to work in the same party as high-levels). With that knowledge though, make sure your PC is prepared for an extended combat-oriented event away from anyplace they can stock up on adventuring goods.

If possible, I'll try to tie this to the Feast of the Moon event that is being organized by the community. That will determine the location PCs should gather. So if you're interested, post in that thread about the time/place you'd like to start the Feast of the Moon event.

And with the event tonight, the Arrival of the Horde comes to a close. I especially want to give a HUGE shout out to DM Bert, DM Plinth, and DM Karebear for assisting tonight. This was the first time *ever* that we have had 4 DMs working one event - and from what I heard and saw, I think it was worth every one of us as we were able to mix considerable RP in with combat as the players who were involved had to spread out and protect strategic points.

Thanks to the DMs and players who made this a memorable campaign.

Now to start planning the next one! ;)
