I have a question that has come up for me.
Recently I had to re-roll Nebtha for mechanical reasons. The reason was his original RP goal (which he really has not disclosed IC) is to become a Thayan Knight, but due to my OOC ignorance as a new player (and a requirement exception I misinterpreted) I had to re-roll him to get the feat I needed.
Now, this is not about the levels I lost, nor the wealth I had accumulated, as there are many schools of thought about keeping gear (it is you, and you don't throw everything away just because you change jobs) or discarding gear (you donate it all to the "Gods" as a price for gaining your new skills); either works, it's a server choice. It may even just be for convenience, not having to script it all; that's fine too. Thay is actually kind in allowing a PC who re-rolls to get half their levels back, so that's not the issue. :) Other changes to my PC (i.e. map XP for exploring) are not so critical to my eyes.
But it is certainly an issue when it comes to the Notoriety I had accumulated. Notoriety is not about level, because it has been stated time and time again how you can have low-level PC's who have high notoriety; I think it is even a server desired condition, based on recent changes. :) Your notoriety system is huge, and all-encompassing as to how a PC is viewed here. Nebtha had joined the Pyarados Legion, and it was a huge part of who he was; I took that ball and ran with it. :) As well, he was an accomplished slaver, with well over 40 slaves taken. But now, I cannot even get my Legion cloak, as I don't have enough Notoriety; same story with re-purchasing shackles. And I feel crippled in his RP, as when I try to RP it, it comes across as false to me...because I am no longer a member of the Pyarados Legion, I can no longer wear the cloak exclusively, cannot even get in the doors of the Keep, and the Sergeant won't speak to me. It is not like I can even RP that I have been placed on suspension or anything, because the Legion is for life here. I am back to the Beggar quests, desperately trying to finish those (more in an OOC manner than IC, truthfully) just so I can get back to where his story was before it was interrupted. So there are mechanical restrictions IG that are based on notoriety; I've listed two. There may be more, but I've only been here two weeks and haven't plumbed the depths. :)
My question is, is there a reason that if you re-roll the same character (not retiring an old character in favor of a new one), that you can't keep the notoriety that that PC had accumulated? This is not about getting a leg up, this is about (as I see it; correct me if I am viewing this wrong, please) the fact that accumulated Notoriety is personal, it is that characters story, their reputation, and who they are does not simply go away with their change in vocation; the name they made is still the name they made for themselves.
Thank You. :)
