Suppose Player character X has possession of slave chains to which PC Y is bound.

(1) Can character X gift those chains to PC Y? And if it does what happens to PC Y? Can PC Y then be sold or summoned if it has the chains in its pocket?

(2) Suppose character X is retired. What happens to PC Y? Will it automatically find itself in the slave pen again? Will it remain a slave, but without anyone being able to sell or summon it?

P.S. I'm aware that char X can sell the chains (and the slave) or break the chains and set slave PC Y free; that's not what I'm asking.

I'm not 100% sure on these answers because I haven't had much experience dealing with slave PCs but...

1) I suppose it is possible to give the slave their own shackles (never actually tested it before), but that wouldn't mean much. Technically the "magic bound to the shackles" considers character X the owner of slave Y, regardless of who holds the chains. That's why there's an option to transfer ownership of a slave from one PC to another. If that's not done, character X will always be considered the owner in-game and OOC. Only when you decide to transfer, sell, or release the slave is slave Y considered "free" from character X. I'm pretty sure the slave wouldn't be able to use the shackles either, nor any other PC who isn't the owner.

2) If ownership of slave Y is not handled before character X retires, DMs could set up a new PC owner for the slave through some sort of RP, or have them be put back into the slave pens and they can choose those options given to them there. The last option is time-based, I think. After a certain amount of time in-game if character X is not active, slave Y will automatically be put in the pens
