Spell-Prices Through-the-Roof

Thayan Said:

If you increase your base Appraise skill when you level up your character, this will result in -at worst- the same appraise reaction from the merchant. Your reaction will always increase at least a point at a time unless it is already at the midway point (or greater) on the 'favorable' scale. At that point your roll will need to surpass the merchant's to go higher, however you will never go backwards from where you are with a merchant when you add points to your Appraise skill.

---------------------------------
Thus, I expected when I put a point in appraise, to get -lower- prices from Hazlok's master, or the same, however, when I put a point in my prices, instead of lowering, jumped through the roof, for instance, a scroll of acid fog went from XXXX (I recorded the price of all scrolls when I first got access to thes shop) to XXXX!!! That's over a 50% increase! (Ironically, at the worst shop possible for my character) Absurdum!

Unless there's some component that I don't understand to this, this is -way- too high! Let me know!

Thank You,
Moi

Moving to the Tavern forum.

Due to the very unique items (mainly the spell scrolls he has that can be found no where else), the fact that masters don't care a whit for their apprentices, and that they were hearing Apprentices have been consorting with others to give spells from their spellbooks - or scrolls and components purchased directy from the Red Wizard master, most Red Wizard masters just raised their base prices.

And just to make sure everyone knows - but Red Wizards are *very* protective of their magic at this point in Thay's timeline. They hoard it and guard it carefully, even from each other at times.

Thank You , Thayan!... okay, well at least we all know there's an alternative (and IC!) reason behind it than my appraise check... though I had thought the -purpose- of having the shop was to give apprentices a more affordable way of getting items neccessary to their class, and now due to the base increase they're actually more expensive than other sources (though of course the unique items remain that, unique)...

And, since it has been moved to the tavern instead of bug issues, allow me to add: {half-jokingly} There goes my hopes of finishing my spellbook through the 6th circle... now that it costs more than a manor house... heheheh...

As a side note: Again, it's a pity that we don't have 'spellbook' items that could record what wizards have learned and be relearned using them... For one, I think it would be neat to see old/dead/retired pc's (or famous npcs!) spellbooks floating around and being sold for 50-100k gp, heh, along with yet another reason to kill your fellow mage (because now to learn their spells you have to keep them alive somehow >_>)

Interesting idea on the spellbook item. That does sound like a very interesting possibility...

Also, I should point out that if you as an apprentice are unable to complete your spellbook before being sent to the Red Wizard trials, you will get a chance to do so as a Red Wizard (with a new addition coming in the next server update). So there is not a need to rush to try and get all the spell scrolls now - which was also a factor in the change in prices.

When I was still working as a PDM one of the items I handed out was spell books on occassion. One example was a Necromancers spellbook that allowed the user to cast Negative Energy ray 2/day and Negative Energy Burst 1/day.

Spellbooks can be utilized in such a way in the future... perhaps some special wizard (cough cough... Grostil) can start using them as rewards if other people are interested?

I had a spellbook of 1/charm a day that I bought in the market ((Who owned the Merchant at the little stall in the market in Bezantur anyway who is gone now?)) but I lost it... anyways, those -do- work yes, but I was thinking of a different sort of functionality...
