NWN does not work
#31
Well, first game installed, no expansions or updating done. Tried to play it, here is the result:

"While attempting to configure the game settings, the Config Utility made the following observations that may affect how well Neverwinter Nights works on your system. If the Config Utility reported something incorrectly, please ignore it and change whatever recommendations it made in the options window. Review the system specifications on the game box for more information.

NOTE: Neverwinter Nights may run well in spite of the reported observations. If you have problems, please refer to the Infogrames Support Website at http://www.ina-support.com or the Neverwinter Nights Community Website at http://nwn.bioware.com/support for the latest known issues and additional information.

The system does not meet the minimum processor speed requirements. You will most likely have performance problems running the game, which can be reduced by lowering detail settings in the nwconfig program."

This was then followed by trying to open the game in Compatibility Mode (as suggested) with 800x600 (60Hz): The game started to load, then stopped inexplicably. Could run other functions and tried loading the game again, same point and then stopped. The CD drive also refused to open.

Total side info but installed an older game and that worked fine. Star Wars Galatic Battlegrounds

Okay so I then figured I'd install Undrentide just to see if it'd make a difference.. this time it gets to a black screen, error report and complains about a Modfile: atioglxx.dll. Then tried it again and back to ntdll.dll error. Also Kaspersky seemed to have blocked the NWN.exe file due to it being marked as a PDM.Keylogger kernal thingy

What's your processor speed? I find it unlikely that your system fails to meet the minimum requirements, so that might indicate that something is "wrong" there.

I apologize if I missed it (I did just skim again to look) but what type of video card are you using? ATI cards (at least used to) have the atioglxx.dll issue. I don't know if it's still a problem with newer cards.

Have you tried renaming nwmain.exe to something (anything) else? You can always change it back if it doesn't help, but I've read that it sometimes corrects this issue (don't ask me how, I'm not a tech guy).

Did you turn off all of the "bells & whistles" (ie shiny water, shadows, etc)?

The report of the config utility failing is normal because the many years old tool can't make anything of your (assumed) quite new CPU identidier. Also to even be able to use nwn on a rather new system you have to install all expansions and the latest patch - this is even more critical when using windows vista and above. Also if you do use those OS's you have to disable the (quite useless anyway) Aero GUI. And last: the ntdll.dll error points once more to a corrupted OS... If all else fails and you have a powerful graphics card - set up a VitualBox VM and run nwn through that. I have do this and it worked, though the performance was not great.

I had NWN installed on an older PC, when the PC got old I used its back-up drive to move over all the useful things I had (NWN included lol), pulled the hdd out and I plugged it in as an external hdd on my new PC and copied everything to the new PC (I have some handy cables for that).

My NWN works flawlessly with following PC specs:

Windows 7 64 bit
Intel Core i7
GeForce GTX 560 Ti

I did the same. Simular system expect my graphics card is ATI Radeon hd 5800 series

Well its starting to look like a full on reset may be required, sigh. I can't get it to work. Maybe im grasping at strays here but when checking uot the nwn settings in the ini. file. I noticed it said my ATI driver was Unknown as well as the nVidia one. I wrote ati2dvag.dll into it and ran the game to see what happened and it started complaining about an aclayer.dll now instead. KTA any idea whether thats a step forward or back maybe?

I take it you are talking about the file 'nwconfig.ini'? If so I advise against altering it manually. It contains values collected by the configuration utility and the respective part of my 'nwconfig.ini' look like this:

Code:
[Video Card]
Type=RDPDD Chained DD
VRAM=4096
Desktop Resolution=1920x1080
Desktop Color Depth=32
Result=2
Skip=0
[Open GL]
OpenGL Installed=1
OpenGL Version=4.2.11631 Compatibility Profile Context
ATI Driver=6.14.10.11631
nVidia Driver=
Result=2
Skip=0
[Direct X]
DirectX Installed=1
DirectX Version=DirectX (9.0+) (4.09.00.0904)
DirectX Build=4.09.00.0904
Result=2
Skip=0

That means instead of 'Unknown' your file should contain the exact version of your graphic card drivers. So entering 'ati2dvag.dll' will not do anything good.

I did the same as well, but it hasn't been flawless. I lost the ability to see which of my spells has been used when viewing the spellbook (they're all solid coloured, no shadowing out when used, but I can still use quick-slots to check), my rest icon doesn't go red when in combat/no-rest zone, and I dont have my spell effect icons blink out before they fade anymore.

The latter makes using spells like invisibility rather risky and fun. :3
