Troubling Times

The doomsayers were more active than usual, she thought as she sat quietly in a dark corner of the Sea Wolf tavern, listening to yet another crazy proclaiming the end of Thay, the gods, the world, and the universe. The growing disapproval of the patrons was almost palpable and finally, out of nowhere, an arrow flew to catch the doomsayer through the throat. Clutching his mortal wound and falling to his knees, the man’s eyes were wide with shock as the guard who shot him strode through the smoky room with bow still in hand and watched impassively as the man toppled forward at his feet.

“He and I had this conversation before, and I’m sick of repeating myself,” announced the cruel innkeeper, Wola Fahn, from behind the bar “So this is the result. We will hear no more of this nonsense of doomed gods and the world coming to an end!” Sweeping her eyes across the sparse crowd of the patrons who had not run out as the man died, she announced loudly “And that goes for everyone. Any more doomsayers in here upsetting my customers will be removed,” she glanced at the inert form of the dead man “with deadly force.” The remaining patrons quickly lowered their heads and went back to their drinks, or quietly tried to slip out of the tavern anxious to avoid any trouble.

As the woman in the corner leaned back and started to relax, only her contoured white mask hid her surprised look as she noticed the Masked One standing by her side, surveying the group. Dressed all in black with a dark hood and his own dark mask covering his face, after a moment of gazing at the dead man being removed from the inn, he turned to her and simply handed her a sealed letter.

Leaning in, his harsh voice sending a shiver down her spine, he whispered “The ship just arrived and the enemy is ready to strike. You were right. There is little time left to avert a major setback, but I feel something even worse on the horizon, and I cannot say what. All I know is that you must work quickly.”

Welcome to the next major campaign of the Thay PW! This campaign will be open to any who can make scheduled or unscheduled events. In addition, the DM team is working hard to come up with events and have a large and active presence in-game during the turbulent period in history which is about to occur.

The first main campaign events will begin the weekend of August 17 (although some have already started!), and the campaign itself should run for approximately 6 weeks until around the end of September. Look for many DM-led events during at least the last 4 weeks of that time when shit really hits the fan, and updates in the Events and Happening forum for news as to what is going on in the realm of the Red Wizards.

Many of this campaign's events will be spontaneous and will not be announced beforehand, however any scheduled events will be announced in this thread.

I will be running my first event related to this today at ~2:00 PM CDT (about 3.5 hours from the time of this post). Depending on the amount of people on, I may instead try again, or run a second event, later this evening around ~7:00 PM CDT. So if you're thinking of hopping on today, I'd encourage you to try and login around (roughly) those times and I'll look to get your PC involved in the event if we have enough people on to run one, or both.

No event at 7:00 PM tonight, but I will plan to run a second event following up on this first one ~2:00 PM CDT tomorrow. Even if you weren't involved in this first one, you are welcome to join the second one.

My next event related to the first two will be held this Thursday, August 22 at 7:00 PM CDT. As with the last one, even if you weren't involved in the previous events, you are welcome to have a PC join. This event will be primarily RP-based, so PCs of any level will be able to have more of an impact assuming they can talk and have some type of problem solving skills. ;) For any interested, you may RP that your PC received a letter seeking mercenary assistance, if you like - or you can simply RP that your PC is there by happenstance and gets sucked into things.

To get things started on time, I ask that any interested already be at the Way Inn in the Alaor Naval Base before the scheduled start time. Since you now have multiple days notice, I will not be OOCly jumping any PCs to the event.

The final event of the current storyline I have been running will be held this Wednesday, August 28 at 7:00 PM CDT. Any interested should make their way to the Alaor South Isle - North Coast as if they had either spoken directly to a priest(ess) of Umberlee/Istishia or overheard from ‘somewhere’ that the faiths of Umberlee and Istishia are calling all to witness a great miracle to save the Alaor from a terrible fate.

So...it’s just another boring weekend, right? Thay is through it’s troubling times now so nothing to see here, right? WRONG!!! ;)

Thay’s *true* troubles, and indeed Faerûn’s troubles, are only just about to begin. This weekend will be the start of a very important and tumultuous time in Thay’s history. As I have mentioned, the DM staff has been working together to come up with a number of DM events and ideas that will be starting *this weekend*, which will run for approximately the next 4 (real-time) weeks.

Again, many of these events will not be announced, however when or if the DMs know they have time to run an event ahead of time, they may announce it here. So I *strongly* I encourage everyone to login *outside* of announced DM events to develop a rapport with other PCs and players – and you never know when a DM event might happen assuming there are a few proven roleplayers logged in and traveling together.

In addition to karilynn’s announced event above on Sunday, I will plan on kicking off the start to things sometime after 7:00 PM CDT this Saturday evening, August 31 wherever the largest concentration of players might be (and working to include stragglers as/if possible). I personally am really looking forward to the next few weeks – we have some crazy surprises in store for everyone!

The Time of Troubles is upon Thay! For those of you who are not familiar with it, or what caused it, you will experience the effects in-game and eventually learn what has happened and why either in-game or through in-character forum posts here.

I do want to give warning, that perhaps the most prominent effect *everyone* will encounter is the unreliability of magic. Divine spellcasters may perhaps be the hardest hit as their divine magic will not work at all unless in a very specific circumstance (to be revealed eventually - although it is doubtful that knowledge will be much help to most). This wild and dead magic will affect memorized spells, magical potions, wands, etc. But it *will* affect NPCs as well as PCs, so you will be on somewhat equal footing with hostiles you encounter.

The Time of Troubles will not last forever, so I ask for everyone’s understanding when a magic spell goes awry (or doesn’t ‘go’ at all) that you simply RP out the results and have your PC count it as a learning experience. As with everything though, this too shall pass. But until then try and have fun and perhaps make your own plans to do something outrageous that your PC would never have dreamed of when the Red Wizards were sure their magic wouldn’t blow up their faces.

There will be some crazy and bizarre things happening that have never occurred before and likely never will again due to there not being a good IC reason to explain them – until now! We do realize that unreliable magic will make adventuring more difficult and dangerous, and cause some additional frustration to players/PCs. Because of this, the DM team is committed to providing a number of events throughout the coming weeks that the Time of Troubles affects Thay.

We will have DMs on and plan to run some scheduled events this weekend around 12:00 PM CDT on Saturday, September 14 and sometime after 7:00 PM CDT on Sunday, September 15. If any of you had PCs who were at the event which was ran to kick off the Time of Troubles (the event that occurred two Saturdays ago in the World's End Dungeons) it would be great to see you on for the Saturday event. However, if you weren't there, you are still welcome to join.

Oh yes...very welcome...you'll see... ;)

I plan to run two related events tomorrow starting sometime after 7:00 PM CDT and Wednesday starting sometime after 7:00 PM CDT. If you had a PC involved in the Hoar event or Mulhorand invasion events, I encourage you to try and make these. I will try to involve other PCs, if possible.
