Role Playing the Sneak – Player Tips
#1
First let me state that we have no rules regarding how the sneaking and/or hiding skills of PCs are played. These tips are for those players who would like to put more RP into the sneaky rogue and not just walk up on them because the game mechanics allow it.

To make for a more realistic rogue, use buildings, corners, shadows, etc. to help your PC blend in. That wall will help prevent them from noticing you mechanically as well as give you an opportunity to run away if they decide to shoot arrows or fireballs at you. Walls are your friends no matter the time of day because ICly (In Character) unless that character has a high listen skill or RPs having a strong nose, they're not seeing you from an RP perspective.

Utilize NPCs as cover. NPCs are a boon to any and every rogue trying to do sneaky stuff with PCs. Talk to a merchant and then stealth, then buy something dirt cheap if you get caught. Talk to a random NPC and just leave the conversation open occasionally clicking on dialogue. NPCs are a great way to act inconspicuous both as a PC while spying in on conversations without standing there in HiPS in broad daylight and no shadows about.

Lastly, use your environment. Instead of just standing around that corner, give yourself a reason to be standing there if you get caught. If there’s a wagon there, put yourself in the position so you can try to bluff your way out if found. Stand near a merchant if in the market so you can bluff your way out by making a purchase or selling an item.
