3rd person view.

Hello everyone.

Before you read this thread, please note that I have done exactly the same.


During the event last night and numerous others through out my time here on Thay. I have noticed that a lot of characters have eyes in the back of their head.

What I mean by this is, that if a man walks some distance behind them. Some characters instantly notice them or see them, as if they were in front of them.

I personally find this wrong, and think that people should stop doing it. Of course if someone walks behind you in plate armor or very close you would hear or smell them.

My half-drow, half-dragon, half-beholder character has eyes in the back of his head. And is lawful good and a paladin with all time detect evil.

Agreed, but sometimes people are just excited to be in an event. Might not hurt to just shoot them a reminder, let them retract the notice and go on.

I doubt anyone would purposely try and ruin someone taking the time to shadow a group. Or if they did, well, then you know to find something else to do, chance are it might get worse :D

Actually (assuming I have the mechanics correct) if the person is in stealth the game does test the other's spot and listen check. if either catches it we see the player. Which is basically, if a player hears a twig crack behind him or spots a shadow coming up next to his he will know another player is there but that player may or may not realize he's been made by his intended victim. It's the same in party if you cross a border in stealth sometimes your party members will suddenly be unable to see or hear you.

It depends on where you are. If in wilderness even if a person in stealth they can be heard of twig snaps but you have to take your character's race into conicderation. For instance if you are elf or half elf you may be able to sense people easier. As mentioned paladins can sense evil and also as also mentioned the person in steath may not know they have been spotted.

In the city it would be much harder as there is noise so you would have to be trained to do so.

Which brings up another question. The game mechanics have certain spells and ioun stones emit sounds while in play, so if someone has spells as such and walk near you one could notice them. So in that case would it be fair that the person is identified especially if the who detected them is of the arcane for instance.

Also consider the "graphics" limitations. There might be a PC who appears to be facing away from where your PC is attempting to hide, but maybe that PC is one who is often looking around their surroundings, and the graphics don't really have a way to just turn a head without turning the whole body. Plus there is the potential for someone who is perceptive to notice reflections in a window or something like that.

In general though, I do agree it shouldn't be "every single PC notices". I've played some PCs who are horrendous at noticing things (poor spot and listen) and it's made for some fun RP situations for me.

On the other hand, I know some people who've played PCs who are very perceptive (maxed out spot/listen plus feats and items), so I'd expect them to be more likely to notice such things.

If we go to the source:

In Dungeons and Dragons, anything within unhindered view in any direction is viewable by the player.

But then again that is for balancing issues on tabletop.
In Nwn and especially a RP server, just be courteous. If someone is trying to be sneaky, let them. If you REALLY want to perceive them, roll a listen/spot check. I prefer the listen check as they are usually behind oneself. (OR: get a bat familiar)
