At some point in the near future I will have a character that might be interested in purchasing a house that a previous character of mine owned due to RP reasons.

Now, I understand(or unless I misunderstood), that after the taxes have been allowed to lapse someone else can buy that house and have possession of the furniture inside. (The later being part of a new server update)

Here's my question: Will that pose a problem for my character? Would that be like passing items between characters on the same account? I just don't want to be doing anything illegal (even though it is Thay), so figured I would ask first.

I would not consider that illegal - especially if the PC is dead/deleted. Assuming your old PC's building was not lost to late taxes prior to June 21, 2012 (the version 5.0 update of the module) the furniture will still be there unless someone else stole/took all the furniture from it before then - which was also a problem up until the last server update.

So reclaiming it and the furniture inside should not cause any problems for your new PC.
