Well, I know people could 'abuse' it or put weird and misleading text in the description.
But for so many others, it gives an opportunity to change it at will, adding or removing certain physical quirks for instance.
I see it as a nice way to set a frame for my character and to give it a certain 'mood'.
For instance, since I knew in advance I could not change descriptions: I limited to describing Alice's physical traits on a fairly basic level.
With player-editing description I could proceed to point out things that are obvious and tell more about her.
I could have explained if there's anything special with her armor, or in this case her sword - which is special.
At the same time, as characters change and develop, so should the description. You acquire new items and lose the old.
I'd in the same manner like to explain how she has trinkets and bottles stuck in various easy-to-access pouches and whatever more she has on the belt. All adding to the flavor and impression somebody would get from my character upon taking a good look at her. Without me having to lengthily emote it and thus perhaps hindering the flow of RP, simply, I'd not spend any time emoting her equipment ingame unless it was REALLY important. But this way, anybody who'd look, can see it.
More you can do with it: Perhaps your character limps or has a visible injury? Perhaps you are trying to hide something our stick out as suspicious. It's another way to easily edit your description to point out what somebody might snap up on, thus providing for more chances to RP. On Arelith, I often had one or two things that (to some) would surely raise interest.
I think it could be very handy, and as far as possible abuse? - You can't build an empire without a little trust!
