An astral projection item for wizards / sorcerers. When they use this item on themselves, the next time they attempt to summon their familiar, it creates a ghostly version of themselves with no combat abilities (outside the ethereal planes), that they are able to possess and control.
The difference between a regular familiar? This creature could have a unique power/player tool ability allowing this form to teleport to an object in their line of sight (just like flight), or if used on a door, teleport to the other side of the door. (Some doors could be flagged to prevent astral intrusions.)
If attacked, or becomes unpossessed, it'll vanish (or just have low HP to begin with). If it is not possessed within the first 12 seconds of summoning, it'll vanish.
Since familiars cant attain items, use certain objects, but can otherwise venture a fair distance away from the caster, I think it'd be a cute way for a wizard or sorcerer to safely scout an area prior.
