Things are challenging in combat, but once you work out how to work your character's abilities you can solo with almost anything. But I'm sure we all know how to use traps with a rogue and summons with a wizard. There are still other ways to get the experience and loot to satisfy one's greed. Slaving with a fighter can give a lot of gold and experience and you only need to find lots of easy to kill goblins. Then you can work your way up, grabbing shamans and chieftans etc. I have played rogues, fighters and wizards, all can be soloed successfully. One has to also accept sone deaths, one death put me off back in beta for quite a while, but i'm still here. Tharag demonstrated how to make a good cleric, so any of those four (fighter, rogue, wizard and cleric) could be good choices for soloing. But that said one will die occasionally, you didn't expect this to be easy did you? What sort of character are you playing, perhaps there's some feature you've missed that could make things easier. Though like the factions, not all classes, alignments etc. are created equal within Thay. Particularly good aligned characters have less options such as slaving, they are also subject to more slaver attacks. Of course it'd be nicer to simply have other PCs to adventure with, and I'm not saying we couldn't do with any more DM action. I find it to occasionally be fun, but soloing without getting much exp due to battle fatigue gets old fast, there is nothing really to do in between fights except go to the next one. If it could run a check that there isn't anyone else on within (say) 5 levels, then perhaps it doesn't apply as much.
