Absolutely. Not.

PCs do not magically converse with someone telepathically about their god. The range of text from a NPC conversation is visible from the same range as PC text. That is how NWN is simply setup. In no way can it be considered OOC. Also, consider this: in real life if someone who you don't even know comes up to you and starts preaching about a religion you either don't care about, or knew nothing about, whether it is God, Jesus, Allah, Buddha, or whoever - they obviously feel very strongly about their beliefs and are likely bordering on the fanatical (Jehovah's Witnesses, anyone?). Anyone who is not a strong believer who may overhear these people will likely be rolling their eyes at them. And them stomping feet, arms flailing around, etc is ABSOLUTELY how I want people who do this in-game to be seen and envisioned. And that is why the cutscene is as it is.

The more I hear of this occurring around others when something else was/is going on, the more I tend to view use of this feature as a powergaming tactic rather than an RP tactic. It seems to me that most people doing this around others -especially if they were just interacting with them- are maybe bored with the RP, or because of [insert other reason to gain XP here]. Then, covering it with a thinly veiled RP reason (I'm a Cleric/Druid/Holy Warrior of my god), they decide they're going to make some 'easy XP' when they aren't being directly engaged by others around them - so they decide to talk to the nearest NPC about their god. It's not that they have a real good IC reason spread the worship of their god at that *exact* moment. It's more that they want the XP right then and there.

But regardless of the true reasons for doing this, it seems this has elicited quite a negative response from pretty much everyone talking about it (myself included). So with either tomorrow's or Friday's reset, I will be enforcing an attempted 'etiquette fix': Random (non-questgiver/quest target) commoner NPCs will no longer talk to a PC if there are other visible PCs within 30 meters of them. They'll just say they are very busy or some such nonsense. Assuming this works as intended, this should be one point of 'etiquette' that no one needs to worry about anymore.

So with that, my rant is over and everyone should be able to take one point of concern off your etiquette lists. I would like to return this thread to the broader topic for anyone else has some recommended RP etiquette they'd like to bring up.
