I think miscreants creative choice on this one is the right choice and here's the reasons why.
First of all the scale of the rods and wands is just wrong in the game engine. Here is an illustration to show exactly how bad the problem of scale is. The first item is a rod if you haven't guessed, and the second item is the wand, along side them are the re scaled versions of the same item.
Its crazy how big that rod is, and its crazy how big that wand is. Rods and wands are supposed to be small, light weight, easily concealable, and easily equipable items to supplement a wizards spells that he can cast per day, they are probably the most useful items a wizard can have and they are life savers. A very typical wizard is a pack animal, he might carry a hand full of rods or wands everywhere he goes, as well as his rods and wands he has to carry potion bottles, scrolls and magical items which could be anything from crystal balls, mirrors, masks, strange boxes, wooden/stone/ivory carvings, and most importantly a huge spell book large enough to contain all his spells, not to mention bags of spell components. So for that reason they have to be small and light weight, they shouldn't be 3/4 the length of the wizard. If you want something big you have the quater staff, the quarter staff fills that niche.
Seriously if you think being a wizard is all about carrying the biggest staff, or carrying the biggest rod, so everyone knows your a wizard and can see you coming from 50 meters away wherever you go, I don't think you appreciate what the wizard class is all about. In most nations in the setting Wizards are feared, distrusted, and completely miss understood by local people and by governments, and they are constantly in danger of being killed by rival wizards, so they have to be somewhat conspicuous or at least aware that if they attract attention to themselves they are putting themselves at risk. They are the target of greedy thieves, assassins sent by rivals or by frightened local governments who want to dispatch them, or possibly depending on the nation and circumstances by mobs of locals. The only thing that stops most people confronting them is the fear of what the wizard might be capable of doing but that doesn't mean they get to walk into town anywhere and have it easy wherever they go. So once again they rely on their trusty rods so they have to be easily handled and equipped.
