Aviel Darkblood
Female, half-elven 21 years of age. Complex personality; intelligent but mentally and emotionally unstable.
Born in Menzoberranzan as a slave to House Shobalar from a half-elven mother as part of a special breeding programme to train potential 'fronts' for Drow influence on the surface. Selected from early childhood for training as a wizard and a 'front' due to her intelligence and talent for the Arcane. Reared with the brutal efficiency typical of the Drow. Had her face disfigured at the age of five with a blunt knife and a few well-placed spells to give her an orc-like appearance, by way of punishment for being reluctant to absorb her lessons.
This educational measure had the desired effect. Aviel became a psychological chameleon and from then on absorbed the Drow way of thinking with alacrity and adapted completely to their way of life. In time displayed a satisfactory lack of scruples, empathy, principles, regard for rules, and loyalty. Showed complete practicality in all matters, and the required veneration of Lolth and her Drow masters. Was seen to exhibit a talent for commerce, subterfuge, and manipulation and to desperately search for a source of strength, protection, and approval. Was noticed to completely open herself to Lolth and her teachings and to channel the rage so common to Lolth's priestesses when provoked or cornered. Seen to exhibit stubborn courage in conflicts. Was awarded the signal honour of receiving a brand in the form of an angry-red spider on her left shoulder to mark her as one faithful to Lolth. Passed the competitive examinations for training as a 'front' (as one in ten did). Was taught Common, Elvish, Drow, Undercommon and Draconic in preparation for service on the surface.
Was allowed the great honour of attending the ordinary basic wizardry course provided by House Shobalar instead of the abbreviated programme for normal 'front' trainees. Came out at the top of her year and was (exceptionally for a slave) allowed to enter in the annual wizarding competitions where she won an honourable mention for her teachers. As a prize, was granted the privilege of making a request concerning her further education.
Correctly seeing Priesthood to Lolth as the real seat of power, she unwisely requested to be allowed to attend Arach Tinilith as a trainee Priestess instead of further training as a Faern. Was examined as to her favour with Lolth before a decision was made, and signally failed to pass even simplest clerical cantrip despite her clearly apparent devotion and her most ardent prayers. Was thereby identified as dangerously lacking in Lolth's favour. Escaped summary execution by a chance opportunity to sell her as a talented but partially trained 'front' to House Dekza of Undrek'Thoz, thus allowing House Shobalar to recoup the cost of her wizardly training and as a bonus saddle House Dekza with a slave that might potentially draw the ire of Lolth onto them unless swiftly dispatched.
Was mentally shattered at having her deepest devotion so casually and inexplicably spurned by Lolth. Healed somewhat during the month-long subterranean caravan journey to Undrek'Thoz by way of Ched Nasad and Sschyndylryn, but remained deeply wounded and mentally fragmented (even if well-masked by her training and intelligence). Became embittered and channeled the rage that suffused her towards the goal of escaping. Took her chance to escape when the caravan she had been dispatched with was inexplicably attacked by a swarm of spiders near an exit to the surface, and fled the Underdark.
Survived by hiring herself out for a year as a maid at a nearby farm in a village near the Earthspur Mountains and learning the ways of the surface. Was assaulted by the farmer in a rape attempt, went into a rage, killing the farmer and everyone else on the farm. Afterwards covered her tracks by taking everything of value and torching the farm. Buried everything traceable nearby and set out towards the Earthspur mountains in the East, keeping only the coin. Chanced upon a temple dedicated to Oghma and was allowed hospitality for a year, working as a scribe in return for all the study she could do in her spare time. After this year travelled to Mulmaster on failing to secure approval for a more permanent position. Naturally gravitated towards one of the local Thieves guilds in Mulmaster, and quickly rose to a mid-level position. Was sent to Tantras as part of a negotiating party, but was waylaid by a band of slavers. Spotted by Red-wizard talent-scouts while in the process of being captured, and sent to Thay.
Remains unable to harbour even slightest disrespectful thought against Lolth or her former Masters despite having by now developed a clear-sighted and cynical view of both, but continued fearing and hating them in equal measure.
