“Velsharoon!” Victor called into the darkness, storming through the Tombs of the Destroyer.
No response.
“VELSHAROOOOOON!” he yelled louder. “I have done what you commanded! Now set me free!”
Victor thought carefully on all he had done in the last decade or so. He had risked his life many times on behalf of Velsharoon. He had selected new adventurers to benefit the Vengeful on Velsharoon’s bidding, and several now even journeyed with him through the planes as the first and most powerful followers of Faerûn’s newest god.
Velsharoon had protected him from Tam’s control all these centuries - while Tam truly thought Victor was his. How Velsharoon had accomplished this, Victor never understood, nor cared. But he had never betrayed this to Szass Tam, despite the fact he had never been specifically commanded not to reveal he was not under Tam’s thumb. The reason he had not was Velsharoon had promised that, with the successful completion of the Ritual and when he had ascended to godhood, he would free him from his bondage and Victor would become the true and only master of his Coven.
Yet it had not happened. And now Victor was alone and he was still under the compulsion not to leave Thay. Neither he or any of his Coven could.
If he remained here, Tam would surely find him and then...
“Victor,” a cold, malevolent voice rasped from behind him.
Victor spun around, with his sword already in hand and teeth bared, dropping to a combat stance. In one fluid motion he lunged at the sound of the voice. However, his body would not respond as he stood rooted in place, unable to move.
“Velsharoon betrayed us, and you with him,” the disembodied voice continued. “Now under normal circumstances I would simply destroy you, but since Velsharoon has graciously offered your continued service as his mortal representative here in Thay, you will live. Besdies - it is far better to deal with one treacherous Elder Vampire of one powerful coven, rather than a half a dozen treacherous Master Vampires of weaker covens.
“Despite the fact I despise Velsharoon for stealing this power and not sharing it with *his* rightful master, the Vengeful will call upon our ‘benefactor’ for the use of his newfound power. It will only help our plans continue to grow to fruition, so I will swallow my pride and accept it.
“I *will* rule the Realm of the Red Wizards someday. And when that day occurs, the rest of Faerûn shall tremble as all the *UNITED* legions, demons, and undead of Thay pour forth to give battle. You, my friend, will continue to help until Thay once again lies under my control.”
Victor, still frozen and unable to move could only manage something he had not done since becoming a vampire. A single tear ran down his face as he finally realized he would never be free of Thay and the tyrants that ruled it.
No response.
