Back to the Future (of Thay)!

Thinking on this, I would be terrified trying to finish the wizard trials at a high level. The design you made makes them incredibly difficult as they are, add now creatures casting timestop or summoning dragons. Yikes!

For someone like me, who never really got into many adventuring groups. Losing the gold required to put what simple furniture I had in the tower, would be a blow. A reboot is fun and all, and yeah you could go back and serve Bane again, but why bother? ooc knowing he is going to die again.

I have so little time to play as it is, so my vote would mean next to nothing. But I think a reboot, being told to redo everything all over again. Would not be something I'd return too. No big loss to the server in the grand scheme of things, but it would be a sad departure for me. But this is your server, and i'll respect any decision made.

Been thinking on this since I read it yesterday evening and I'm seeing the pros and cons to both. As someone who has not had a very long history with the server as some of the others, it would be cool to get to take part in those highlights (Salamandar Wars, Tuigan Horde, etc.) that I have missed.

At the same time, I was kind of excited that the server might be charting some new terriority here shortly in leaving the lore domain and forging it's own future. Maybe a campaign that actually prevents the Spellplague from occurring or something.

I'm still thinking on this before I give a vote either way. Unlike some of the others starting over is pesky to me but not crippling, as all of my characters are lower levels and do not have the huge investment that some of the other players have put in. I'll enjoy playing either way.

I do have a question though. For existing characters that start over, do they have any memory of Thay? Or the other players they have met?

Remember that we can explore the future of Thay next time it rolls around, that is a pro to the timewarp scenario. Also gives us time to prepare even better for that possibility. I would add that Payne your voice does matter, thats why Thayan put the question to the public, also your points are totally valid. If this was something so hard to take we would lose players over it, then it might not be the best choice. However, Thayan did mention several possible plans on how to take a bit of the burn off for notable folks, like yourself.
Phydran Doon - Red Wizard of Divination
Djed Setesh - Deathdealer and Overlord of the Dark Suns' faith
Ihsahn - Red Wizard of Evocation
Ryech Voralt - Priador Legionnare

Driving away any active player, regardless of how active they are, is one of the things I want to work hard to avoid. As it appears faction standing is a big sticking point here for multiple people, perhaps something else can be done if a combination of the compensation options I have listed aren’t appealing to try and make up for it? I'm open to suggestions. Maybe a zulkir takes note of a newly arrived and powerful wizard to Thay who knows much and sends them to the trials right away or makes them a Red Wizard outright. Same thing with a tharchion deciding to ‘draft’ a new arrival into their legion and give them the rank they had prior to the reboot. Doing this for every PC isn’t viable (we have well over 5K PCs in the server vault) since some type of short one-off event would be needed as an IC reason for it. But for those (semi-)active players who request compensation in the form of faction status for their PC(s) after the reboot I think, and hope, we could work something out.

Pleiade - currently memory of the future and exploits done prior to the reboot would be lost with the caveat that your PCs could/should RP that they ICly remember things very quickly:

1. Memory of the future and any exploits of your PC in Thay prior to being thrown back in time. ICly, you will be asked to RP that you are 'awaking' in Thay sometime after the typical opening sequence having been saved from slavers by the mysterious allies. Essentially - it will be as though your returning PC is new to Thay as it was after the original opening sequence for new PCs, but you can RP that for some reason he/she seems to know or remember things about Thay, places within it, friends, enemies, allies, etc as they are encountered.

On a side note, I just had to check out Payne’s comment about 5th edition. I’m quite surprised WoTC may be backpedaling on the whole 4th edition debacle. Interesting.

heh, you know, I have no idea how I missed the very first line of what you would lose.... Apologies for the question. Blush

No worries - that first post is a helluva read. Lots and lots of text so it's easy to miss something.

My personal opinion on this would be to just roll forward past the date in which the whole 5th edition hullabaloo kicks off and just go your own way with it, create your own story-lines, world events yada yada and just let creativity control the flow of the world as opposed to doing everything over again with perhaps different outcomes. I am like Animayhem in which losing notoriety that you spend lots of time grinding for in total darkness of how long you have to go to rank-up, would be a major negative point. While yes we may all be in the same boat, and maybe some of us have fewer characters than others as was mentioned, that will not change how I feel about my characters reset. If others have no issue with going through it all over again on replay and taking the compensation; thats fine and is entirely there business but personally. Nah.
Maybe if notoriety reqs were lower across the board but then we'd have alot of high rankers quite fast and I appreciate the reason for the difficulty.. but its a double-edged sword for me in which while im happyish to sweat through the time it takes to get somewhere (now im a proper elf member of assassins guild, yay!). I am not happy with the idea of having that all scrapped as if it and the RP done was a grand waste of time beyond some memories (even if they were good ones). Sure the compensations may be cool if you get to submit in new chars in exchange for old that can request them having a certain position or level of notoriety (skim-read benefits as im apart of the no group, I admit), or start again with high powered or rich characters.. buut since we're capped at 20, money isn't hard to get (im saying that as someone who has never maxed their bank account on ANY server) and everything scales up anyway. To me it doesn't seem like a worthy trade-in. If it goes ahead I may turn in a character rather than do it all over again but my vote on this is dont reset, just go ahead with it and have fun with the world you created. Seems like a good oppurtunity.

I don't have any (at the moment, at least) but how would this affect slaves? Do you lose your NPC slaves? What about horses?

What about PC slaves? I guess they become free again?

PC slaves would be free again. NPC slaves would not transfer (although the only persistent slaves are Pack Slaves and gold would be given to repurchased if desired). The same happens with horses - they will not transfer but gold could/would be given for compensation to buy a new one.

Wait, does this mean Kaiser would have better odds at getting Melody?
