The Dread Riders, I'm pretty sure that's lore friendly too. Since cannon-wise they were associated with Cyric, right?
But there you have mystique and a name worth fearing.

I'd compromise on Dread Riders

Yep since sometimes reds are called dread lords.

Thanks everyone for the great discussion and presenting ideas. Per Animayhem’s suggestion, I have added a public poll to this thread with my top picks and/or amalgamation of some of the names or ideas presented that made the short list. Please vote on your favorite(s) if you like. You can select more than one.
In the first two choices, Riders/Cavalry/Legion can be used interchangeably. So if you like one of those three terms over the other, still vote for the first part and then post which of the three you’d prefer to see used.
A few explanations as to how I came up with the shortlist -
1. Zulkir’s Angels doesn’t really roll off the tongue for me. Too many ‘s’ I think. I also now can’t help but thinking of Zulkir Charlie whenever I say that name too. Damn you Carcass! :P
2. While I understand Dame is the female version of Knight, that name just seems kind of 1930s to me and I think of some mobster talking about a woman he met whenever I hear it.
3. I like the word Ebony better than Sable.
4. Lancer is a type of cavalry which, when I recalled it a few days ago, seemed pretty applicable to a unit with a built-in lance for each mount – which is why it has made the list despite not being mentioned.
5. I tend to agree that having Unicorn in the title doesn’t make is seem all that fearsome.
6. While calling them a ‘legion’ is not accurate in the sense of being a legion of a tharch, there is also the Griffon Legion and Mykrul’s/Cyric's Legion which are not actually tharch legions either. But since I thought the name Black Unicorn Legion was a little bland, and since there was not an official mention of their name, I thought I’d open it up for some ideas that might be more descriptive. However, if that’s what most people think we should go with then…then I’m game for giving it consideration as I make the final choice.

Black Lancer Cavalry sounds good. There's already plenty of legions everywhere and for some reason riders to me makes them sound like a purely ceremonial unit.

I like "lancer", it's less bland than "cavalry" or "riders" BUT... imo "Lancer" and any other cavalry synonym should not be combined in the name. It would be the rough equivalent of the modern day army calling a unit the 7th Armored Tank Division. It's redundant. Armored = Tanks, Lancers = Cavalry. How about just the Black/Dark/Ebony/Dread Lancers?

I agree with Hellstrom, "Lancers" are one thing, but "Lancer Cavalry" is completely redundant...
Thayan, your argument for Black Unicorn Legion swayed me... The Griffon Legion is officially named that way, so why wouldn't the Black Unicorn Legion be?

But what about the 7th Unarmored Tank Division? Ha. Ha. ;)
But I concede the point. I have updated the Second option to the Black/Dark/Ebony/Dread Lancers of Thay. If you pick that, please post which adjective you like the best in front of 'Lancers of Thay'.
EDIT: Meh - I'm going to take that Black/Dark/Ebony/Dread choice away because that give it kind of an unfair advantage over the others below it since it's basically 4 choices in one. So I changed it, yet again, to just the Black Lancers for the second option. However, for any of these, if you have a cool idea for a twist on the name, please feel free to post that too. Just because this is the shortlist doesn't mean these names can't be tweaked a little bit.

2nd option. Dread Lancers of Thay gets my vote.

Dread Lancers Of Thay sounds pretty intimidating, +2!
