Writing System
#1
General Information
A Writing Quill requires an Ink Well to write, except when using it to change the description of a PC. At the cost of 1 charge of ink, it can write on blank books, letters, sheets of paper, message board notices. At the cost of 10 charges of ink, it can engrave a name or description on virtually any other item. Note all commands use a Hash/Number Sign #. You can write on Sheets of Paper, Blank Books, Message Board Notices, and Wax-Sealed Letters until a character maximum is reached. Blank Books and other items have no character maximum however.

Message Board Notices can have their Title and Description modified with this system, which can then be posted to Message Boards found throughout the towns and cities of Thay.

Wax Sealed Letters have a special feature in that their description cannot be read until the letter is activated, which simulates opening the letter and breaking its seal. Using a Signet Ring and a choice of colored wax, a player may set a custom description of a wax seal which will become the description of an unopened letter. The text will be the color of the wax the player bought. Ink Wells have a limited number of charges which go down each time the Quill is used to write. Colored wax also functions the same.

Cylinders are available that dispense one item on use: Sheets of Paper, Message Board Notices, or Wax-Sealed Letters. Cylinders have a limited number of items in each, and can be used to carry multiple writable items without inventory clutter.

Finally, Writing Desks are available at various locations throughout Thay which allow copies of papers, books, letters, and message board notices to be created.

The following is a list of writing system commands that are simply typed in regular chat. In order to use them though, at least a Writing Quill and Ink Well are needed.
#T# = Title
#W# = Write
#C#text = Copy Description of target
#C#all = Copy both Description and Name of target
#C#DM = (DM Command Only) Used to create a copy of target
#P#1 = Paragraph functions like using the Enter Key
#P#2 = Same as #P#1 except twice for creating a blank space for a paragraph (You could just use #P#1 twice but this has been added for ease of use)
#R# = Reverse. Undo last description update in case a mistake is made
#S# = Seal, used to set a custom wax seal description on a letter. You can also set a permanent seal on the Signet Ring so you don’t have to use the command each time
#F# = Finish, sets an item as finished so it can no longer be edited

See Penman Lindbiddle in the Halls of Enlightenment, a temple to Deneir in the city of Umratharos, for examples and details of how to use these commands, and to purchase writing supplies from him which include details on how to use each. Please note that while writing supplies are available from multiple merchants in Thay, he has the largest selection and variety of them.

Letter Delivery
Caravan Masters throughout Thay can be used to deliver a document, letter, or wax-sealed letter to another individual regardless of whether or not that person is currently logged in. To do this, first create your letter and give it the title of "Letter to Name-of-Person" (without the quotes) where the Name-of-Person is the *exact* spelling of the name of the individual to whom you are sending the letter to. For example, if I wanted to send a letter to a character called Balanor I would title it: Letter to Balanor

Once you have created the letter, speak to a Caravan Master and choose the option to send a letter. The first "Letter to Name-of-Person" you hold will be automatically selected as the letter to be sent. So if you have letters you do not want to send yet, drop them or store them before speaking to a Caravan Master. Finally, after paying a minimal fee to send the letter, the letter will be taken and it will be delivered via raven to the individual within several minutes or, if that person is logged off, the next time they login.

Changing a Character's Description
It is possible to change the description of your character through the use of a Writing Quill. To do so, note the following:
1. Changing a PC's description does not require an Ink Well, unlike when using the quill on any other item
2. Use of the following command is what allows you to change your PC's description: #W#Type what you want added to your PC's existing description here.
3. Use of the following command will blank out the description on your PC: #W#[single space]
Note that [single space] *is* a single space - simply hit the spacebar once after typing #W#
4. Use of the following command will revert to your PC's original description: #W#
Note that to revert to your PC's original description you *only* type #W#
5. The following commands are those which can be used when changing your PCs description: #W#, #P#1, #P#2, #R#

I would like to bring attention to this thread as with the server update of 1/14/09, the writing system has completely changed from what it was to what is now detailed in the post above.

Updated 1/25/13 to provide details about changing your character's description in-game and sending letters in-game to other characters who do not necessarily need to be logged in.
