NOITCA, I don't see the opening sequence changing dramatically anytime in the near-to-distant future.
In the past, and now in especially considering it a perhaps a poorly remembered memory of a traumatic event, your character can make of it what they will and their background definitely does not need to be centered around that event. They can most certainly choose to be a native Thayan who was 'saved', or someone from a far-off land who ended up in Thay. I'd recommend to think of it like an event you may have had with bullies as a kid and some teacher/authority figure came along and 'saved' you. In time the event itself may have faded so that not even you remember it, but maybe because of it that teacher/authority figure ended up taking a special interest in you as a result and kept an eye on you as you grew up.
Regardless though, I'll keep in mind the option of at some point in the future perhaps attached special characteristics to new PCs based on city/location they come from. No promises though! ;)
Bigby, PC descriptions can be changed in-game at any time through the writing system implementation we have:
Although I can probably add a line to the spectre's conversation that it is possible to do and put a writing quill in his merchant inventory (and probably other writing supplies as well for those who want them right away).
Thanks for the feedback guys.

It is possible to change the description of your character through the use of a Writing Quill. To do so, note the following:
1. Changing a PC's description does not require an Ink Well, unlike when using the quill on any other item
2. Use of the following command is what allows you to change your PC's description: #W#Type what you want added to your PC's existing description here.
3. Use of the following command will blank out the description on your PC: #W#[single space]
Note that [single space] *is* a single space - simply hit the spacebar once after typing #W#
4. Use of the following command will revert to your PC's original description: #W#
Note that to revert to your PC's original description you *only* type #W#
5. The following commands are those which can be used when changing your PCs description: #W#, #P#1, #P#2, #R#
Although I can probably add a line to the spectre's conversation that it is possible to do and put a writing quill in his merchant inventory (and probably other writing supplies as well for those who want them right away).
Thanks for the feedback guys.
