having been on the opposing side and seeing how justice is handled regardings laws, which seems for everything the consequence is enslavement..i really have to ask..while this may hold true to the storyline and rp.. it's almost worst than suffering a death of a pc and borders along the same lines as permadeath..
who would realistically want to, after spending hours and hours getting a pc "up to par" be someone else's slave for the remaining portion of the pc's lifetime?
if anything even on a first offense this is the punishment served for the majority of crimes.. I see nothing fun or interesting about this..
jail would be more fitting and would seek to stimulate ~more rp..if anything these laws only seek to dampen rp..as I don't forsee ~anyone engaging in pvp or thefts in thay...pvp on most servers can heighten rp and establish conflict but if he are too have our pcs enslaved..? then what.

Slavery is nowhere near as bad as permadeath in the game. It also fits the setting of Thay, and provides a good catalyst for plenty of RP. Unless of course you don't want to play an enslaved character, which is where problems arise I suppose.

Bear in mind that playing a slave when bought by a PC does bring in interesting RP if both you and your characters new master are able to RP with one another. It may not suit your character to be a slave however which leaves the road of escape and living the rest of your life (short of some DM quest or what not) on the run with the slave community out there. Or you could become a gladiator which essentially makes life easier for you as a slave, though caravans and horses and respect etc become much harder to come by.
Something Thayan recently brought up was the ability for players to create their own factions. I presume that goes for escaped slaves who could form some sort of player (to begin with) faction that can then grow to a group that works against Thay or simply defends themselves and escaped slaves FROM Thay. I can think of two organisations already that'd make natural IG allies that you could attempt contacting with some DM assistance. Veiled Alliance and Harpers.
In the end though, slavery is a huge part of Thay and there is nothing to say you can not play as a slave successfully, RP is still available and that's primarily the reason to play. Some creative RP for how your Master controls you can even lead to you gaining continuous levels, then whether or not that bites them in the ass later is something RP ought to decide. If you believe you'd rather not play a slave by having a dead PC then by playing one. Well then just assume your M.A were done with you and that's it. S/He's toast. Fugue him and use his levels to start a new guy or not. The choice is always up to you. Vampires often faced permadeath in much more final ways that have no second chances or options to continue, it was literally permadeath. Standard PC death and slavery don't lead to the end of the RP. So it's inaccurate to say that its better to have no RP through a char (he's dead) then slave RP.
Oh and slavery is a tad more common then you think, atleast in the form of 'protected' servants usually applying to humans protecting members of lesser species in a pseudo-slavery setting where they essentially 'lie' about owning the person in exchange for that person's submission and servitude.. but minus the actual losses of certain freedoms. That's slavery in itself so if people are already doing that successfully.. well losing the rights to a horse and caravan and having an actual collar does not appear to be much of a change. It's all about who you have RPing with you.

So how much does your PC cost? Inge's lonely. And playing a slave was a pretty satisfying pool of drama. c:

So, how would you go about contacting or joining the Veiled Alliance or the Harpers Ingame?

Well now that would spoil the secret now wouldn't it. Ask around, there may be a few PCs who already know ICly...though you should be careful who you ask. :D

Let it be known that no one will ever gain any satisfaction by enslaving one of my characters.

You are always well within your rights to say no when someone asks permission to enslave your character. If you go for it though, you also have the 'right' to be a total pain in the neck.. and suffer whatever consequences result from such :P
