The Zulkir's Curse
#1
“There!” Yaphyll, the zulkir of Divination, practically shrieked. “There, and there again. Did you feel it?”

“Feel what?” Nevron scowled across the table at her.

“A momentary pause in time. Yet another spell cast to stop time,” explained Lallara with a smirk that Nevron had apparently not sensed the disruption.

“Three of them,” corrected the mighty Szass Tam. “How serendipitous that the very reason we’re meeting is reinforcing the problem as we speak.”

“There were two more earlier that you apparently failed to notice,” a cold feminine voice stated from the corner of the room. The heads of every zulkir, and those of the Thayan Knights guarding the council snapped in that direction to see a beautiful woman with long, tangled silver hair approaching the table. A knight charged at her, blade drawn, only to fall headlong through the illusion as he struck.

She continued on to the zulkir council table, as if the man didn’t even exist while Nevron, Thrul, and Maligor jumped up and began murmuring incantations.

“Hold, magelings, and control your minions. I’m here to aid your endeavor,” she continued calmly as she reached the table. Her wild eyes locked on Szass Tam. “Weakening the powerful in your realm is my specialty. I would not think to remain on the sidelines in these efforts of yours.”

Tam returned her stare, and finally after a moment spoke. “The Simbul. Lallara and I have to discuss improving the protective wards. But since you have taken it on yourself to interrupt this council meeting, what do you think you know and how do you think you can ‘aid’ us?”

“Many adventurers, monsters, and bandits in your land have grown powerful. Too powerful. Your legions cannot control them. Your Red Wizards cannot control them. Perhaps even you yourselves cannot control them, and some have become perceived as a threat since you fear you cannot.” The Simbul let her gaze fall to each of the zulkirs as she gave a dramatic pause.

“And…?” Mailgor growled at her after a moment. “Do you have the mass death magic we seek then?”

The Simbul laughed crazily at Maligor’s question for a brief moment and then just as quickly became deadly serious once again. “You know as well as I that there is some force in your midst that protects the most powerful to the point they are practically immortal and return from the dead even if killed. Death magic won’t aid you. At least not at the moment. I offer another way, that will require all your combined power at this table, but it will end your problem - and the threat these powerful people in the land of my enemies pose to Aglarond as well."

The Simbul pulled a brilliant, large crystal from the folds of her robe.

"Behold the Eye of Vecna, source of untold necromantic power," she glance poignantly at Tam. "Recovered by true and loyal adventurers right here in Thay only days ago from the Nine Hells. I have the knowledge to use it and aid you in the creation of a mass enervation spell. This will sap the power of all these beings you fear so much, allowing you and your minions and legions more control over them. As a result, you reduce the internal threat posed by these people, I reduce a growing external threat, and I then continue seek other ways to bring about Thay’s downfall.”

The stunned zulkir council sat in silence for a moment, digesting the proposal from the most powerful and dangerous of their many enemies - even among themselves. After a moment of silence, zulkir Szass Tam rose to his feet.

“Then we act now. Together. But no one must ever know it was us, and we must give those affected some form of vengeance.”
