Random Thoughts: Sister Servers
#1
So anyone who has ever played on the Amia servers knows that they have a pretty sweet script set up over there, right? There's the Amia Island server, and there's the Amia Abroad server. And if you're on one server and you go through certain transitions or board certain ships to certain destinations, the server you're on logs you off. Then that server transfers your character to the other server, and then you can log onto the other server and continue playing your character. In another land. On another server. Neat, right?

So then I got to thinking about how, after all these years, Thayan has finally completed the entire landmass of Thay. And then I started thinking about that invisible fifty-foot wall just west of Murbant which stops you from walking into Aglarond. And then I started thinking about Amia's sister servers again....

So wouldn't it be the coolest thing if, instead of that invisible fifty-foot wall, there was a transition from the Forgotten Realms: Thay server to the Forgotten Realms: Aglarond server? And then you could go north from there and end up on the Forgotten Realms: Thesk server, or you could cut across the Sea of Fallen Stars and end up on the Forgotten Realms: Impiltur server. Go north from there and you're on the Forgotten Realms: Damara server, or go west into Forgotten Realms: The Vast. Hey! The Forgotten Realms: Pirate Isles server is presently defunct. I could ask Luckbringer to hand that server's module over so Thayan can assimilate it into this server's scripts too....

And of course, no matter which server you were on, there would be Red Wizard ambassadors everywhere, just to remind everyone which server is Big Daddy around here.

So which one of us is a millionaire who can easily buy a dozen computers and not think twice about it? Buy all of those computers, Express Mail all of them to Thayan's house and write it all off as a donation to charity so you can score a sweeter tax refund next year. Then Thayan and the rest of us script monkeys can get to work on those sister servers.

So what's stopping you, Donald Trump? I think it's a great idea! Let's do it to it. Cool

I had that thought before. The main problem would be populating all the servers, how many people still play Neverwinter Nights and of those how many are basically loyal to one world? Also how to play characters from nations that are in pretty much a perpetual cold war that often turns hot without basically making it an action server?

Actually, the latter issue can make for some pretty good roleplay, as well as some nasty events whenever the DMs step in. That has been known to happen on the Prisoners of the Mist server, for one. "You come from Barovia, yes? Why have you come to Falkovnia? Maybe you are spy, I should think!" (Hope you remembered to bone up on your social Skills....)

The former issue might be a problem, though. Even if you have the Thay server, the Aglarond server and the Mulhorand server all sitting on the same desk and LAN-linked together, the game client simply doesn't offer any way for characters on different servers to communicate with each other. So if you're in Thay and your buddy's in Aglarond, Tells won't work, ravens won't work, using crystal balls on each other won't work, character locator doodads or Rest menu options (if we had any...) won't work...nothing but getting on your horse and riding to Aglarond would work. And yes, Neverwinter Nights just isn't as popular as it used to be a few years ago, so we might be spreading ourselves a bit thinner that way.

Okay, new plan: We all get together, pool our cash and buy out Electronic Arts. Then we resume all advertising, web domains and other support for Neverwinter Nights, maybe even release a few new expansion packs for the game to help keep things fresh. While we're at it, we can convert The Sims 2 and all its expansions to an MMO and relaunch a Mass Effect 3 that doesn't suck. I figure that Thayan should be good for a market share of at least 10%. All in favor? :)

You live on a mountain overlooking Whoville! Your point of view is therefore invalid, Mister Grinch. :P

That was an invitation to submit your own areas to assist in finishing Thay, then we can start looking outward.

Okay. So I have this wonderful idea for a new area region adventure thingie: a big honkin' chocolate factory! It's a humungous chocolate factory, and a Red Wizard (who conscientiously bucks the trend by wearing purple) oversees the whole thing. And every month, the Red Wizard draws five golden tablets out of a fishbowl, and if your character's name is on one of those tablets, he/she gets taken on a tour of the chocolate factory! And the chocolate factory has, like, a thousand different areas, and an elevator that never takes you to the same destination twice. And the Red Wizard has staffed the entire factory with all of these musically talented gnomes who have been magically mutated to work harder and to not give him any backtalk, but the transmogrification has changed their skins to the same peculiar shade of orange. And if you steal from the Red Wizard or touch something that you're not supposed to touch, you get cursed and your body starts to transform in horrific and unpredictable ways right before the gnomes kick you out of the chocolate factory....

What? It's totally an original concept! So when can I start working on it? :)

Edwin would take something from the Red Wizard, get all grotesquely mutated from a curse and have to be escorted out of the factory by a pack of orange gnomes?

Edwin has some big nads. :P
