I posted this in the Status of Thay PW thread but as I don't want to clog that up too much with all sorts of discussions, I thought it should have its own thread.
Background summary for those who are unaware: The Thay server has died. It will take some time to get it up and running again, if it is possible at all. In the meantime, there is a "back-up" server that we can play on until that point, but it's from February 8, 2014, which means anything that's happened since then will be undone. It also means that anything down on this server during the downtime would be undone once the main server is back up and running again.
Here's my idea:
What if we were to go with the Feb 8 server and run a campaign? The idea is that everyone who wanted to participate would have to create a brand new character, and these characters are bound together for some reason or another in a plot against Thay - one that, of course, will inevitably end up failing. Perhaps they try to lead a slave revolt, perhaps they try to assassinate a Zulkir or even Szass Tam, perhaps they're agents of one Red Wizard involved in a (doomed) plot to foil another Red Wizard. In any case, the idea is that this is something that went on behind the scenes during the past few months or so of game time. Players would go into the campaign assuming that it will end with them being exiled, enslaved, killed, or worse - thus making sure that there's no problem transitioning back to the main server when/if it comes back up.
The campaign itself would be less about gaining power or wealth or influence, but instead it would be more a question of how long we can last. We all go in knowing that we're doomed, knowing that our chances of survival are slim to none, but the tension instead comes from seeing how long we can manage to survive, and how much damage we can do to the enemy (whoever that is) before we go.
It's also certainly possible that the campaign could have an impact in the main server once it gets booted back up - for example, if the campaign revolves around a slave revolt, there could be a later event where slavers are called together to try and recapture those who rebelled. Or if it's a plot against a prominent person, there could be an event based around that as well.
Just a suggestion. I think it'd be a good way to utilize this down time for something more than faffing about while not disrupting or taking focus away from the main server.
Plus it'd offer up a lot of fun RP scenarios, and almost everyone would get to act out a dramatic death/defeat scene.
