Player Etiquette

Hmm, I'd like to add that party chat can be seen by DMs, so I encourage everyone not to use it for extensive OOC chat.

Oh, and what was "Also, be nice to other players"? Chopped liver? o_O

But, you know, if another character's annoying you with preaching, why not skip sending them a jerkish Tell and find an IC way to spin it out? "Don't listen to that Lathanderian drivel, townsman! Lathander makes mewling weaklings out of the mighty! It's true! And YOU, sun worshipper! How dare you pollute the populace's minds? Swallow your tongue and belch your heresy elsewhere!" It's more fun that way. Cool

Djed normally slays the person the preacher is preaching to. That normally delivers a (non)subtle message to the preacher that it might be time to preach elsewhere. Just one example of handling it icly.

Sending a tell asking a player to please not spam you with an NPC wall of text is NOT bad form if it's stated clearly and politely. It's not really safe to assume someone is being a jerk because they asked you not to do this and they sent a tell informing you so, so as not to call you out publicly. Like I had to here with this entire thread because some people wouldn't get the message otherwise.

Animayhem, just because you felt there was a lull in the conversation doesn't mean others were not having quiet conversations without you in them, via whispering. You are NOT the only one who has ever done this. The scene that occurred in the arena tent, is only a single example of a time when it did happen. This was not meant to single you out. Believe it or not, there are far worse culprits than you. What I am explaining is that its polite not to do this. It's certainly not against the rules.

I will also state one more time so it's TOTALLY clear. If you REALLY want to rp preaching so others can get a jist of your faith and your veracity. Then actually rp it. Save the spam for later. There are exeptions, always are. The beggar doesn't move. Talking to the beggar is also a bit spammy, but if your group decides to park there. It's your bad when a new PC walks up and jabbers away. So take it with a grain of salt.

Wids, please stop derailing the thread with pictures of delicious food. You made me hungry. :p

I liked the video pane better. :P

Hey, Carcass! I have photos of last year's borscht too! Wanna see?

(Poor townies. Would throwing choking powder at preachers really be too mainstream? Think of the poor, needlessly butchered Thayan citizens. :P )

<slaps_forehead>Whatever!</slaps_forehead>

I just think I cannot control the people around me, I can only control how I allow it to effect me.

I am just glad you guys allow me to play this game with you. Thank you guys for being here. Otherwise, I'd be playing by myself.

I respect your opinion however I will rp preaching if I feel the need to. I make no apologies for the tent I felt the time was appropriate.

I ignore Djed when he kills things as that is his rp though I dislike it ooc.

The scene too should be concidered ooc as the conversation being seen. If you are not near how can you hear?

The issue isn't about "not being able to hear it," but the fact that it spams everyone's chat menu.

Absolutely. Not.

PCs do not magically converse with someone telepathically about their god. The range of text from a NPC conversation is visible from the same range as PC text. That is how NWN is simply setup. In no way can it be considered OOC. Also, consider this: in real life if someone who you don't even know comes up to you and starts preaching about a religion you either don't care about, or knew nothing about, whether it is God, Jesus, Allah, Buddha, or whoever - they obviously feel very strongly about their beliefs and are likely bordering on the fanatical (Jehovah's Witnesses, anyone?). Anyone who is not a strong believer who may overhear these people will likely be rolling their eyes at them. And them stomping feet, arms flailing around, etc is ABSOLUTELY how I want people who do this in-game to be seen and envisioned. And that is why the cutscene is as it is.

The more I hear of this occurring around others when something else was/is going on, the more I tend to view use of this feature as a powergaming tactic rather than an RP tactic. It seems to me that most people doing this around others -especially if they were just interacting with them- are maybe bored with the RP, or because of [insert other reason to gain XP here]. Then, covering it with a thinly veiled RP reason (I'm a Cleric/Druid/Holy Warrior of my god), they decide they're going to make some 'easy XP' when they aren't being directly engaged by others around them - so they decide to talk to the nearest NPC about their god. It's not that they have a real good IC reason spread the worship of their god at that *exact* moment. It's more that they want the XP right then and there.

But regardless of the true reasons for doing this, it seems this has elicited quite a negative response from pretty much everyone talking about it (myself included). So with either tomorrow's or Friday's reset, I will be enforcing an attempted 'etiquette fix': Random (non-questgiver/quest target) commoner NPCs will no longer talk to a PC if there are other visible PCs within 30 meters of them. They'll just say they are very busy or some such nonsense. Assuming this works as intended, this should be one point of 'etiquette' that no one needs to worry about anymore.

So with that, my rant is over and everyone should be able to take one point of concern off your etiquette lists. I would like to return this thread to the broader topic for anyone else has some recommended RP etiquette they'd like to bring up.

Editted to fix some grammar errors and tone down some of my more...passionate sentences.
