So after a string of, well, really bad luck, I've been thinking this over. When is it appropriate to retire a character, really?
How early is too early? How late is just right?
When you no longer have fun with the character? When you can't seem to think of any particular new goal, or that goal seems unattainable? How many deaths, is death? The first time you're not saved, or do you keep trying until there's nothing left but a husk?
Of course its great when they have a happy ending, but I can't imagine every character gets one :D
Curious to hear what opinions there are around.

There are PCs who have been retired into the mod as NPCs; all of them are of a high level and were played for quite some time.
Many players simply do not respawn a dead PC who has gone to the fugue; either because they have, in the player's mind, died too often, or the ones they run with are no longer around... or they just got burned out on them. Some players, I'm in this group, simply delete their PCs when they get to a point they are no longer enjoying them or because they have a new concept they are dying to try and sacrifice a PC to make the new one.
Really, it all depends on the player and how attached they are to a specific PC or just how badly they want to roll up that new character concept they've been working on.

Sun has pretty much the nail on the head. My first two characters like other long term players, had their character's retired due to the world time shift. They are now NPCs. Avrora in South Market and Master Sergeant Azura.
The new ruling if three only really hit players hard myself included yet it has brought some new life into the mod. I decided to create another character Rimeth as the idea of being a merchant appealed to me having had worked in retail also some newer players were on and some older players had new characters. Marister, ironically was created to assist Miscr3ant and Snipes1302, both players I rped with elsewhere, to navigate through Thay's complexity. However he took off :) Garbage was made as a comic relief character one to use when others were not around. prior to his demise he was mainly a rp character for the Pridaor to help flesh out and finish some game ideas.
I had always played neutral characters the idea of playing an evil character would be a challenge. So I made Vila from Cara. So Vila started as an 8. After I made her well Garbage got recycled.
Retiring Caramiriel was hard as she was my longest and highest level character having reach 20 and due to the enervation reduced to 16. However players who had run with her had either left or deleted characters for others. Thayan has been generous as he has with others, to allow her to come back as an NPC.
Take a look at your characters. Why did you make them to begin with? Have they achieved their goals? As for levels, recycling an even level character is a bit easier. I always suggest people use a build tester module with Thay haks, realy made it easier for me.

For me I won't fugue return a character level 10 or under, I just consider them failed, mid levels though I become more persistent as more time invested and they're more capable of bouncing back from setbacks. Now if you don't find the character fun at all, time to make something new. Tie up any loose ends if you feel you must/can stomach it, but really we're all here to have fun so don't play something you don't enjoy.

Personally, I will retire a pc when its simply no longer fun to play. Death count is meaningless and unless i find that bad rep scores have made the PC unplayable i will not retire them due to this. Everyone has there own opinion but this is partially why i dislike the rep system. Some players obviously feel it enhances game-play but to me well.... i can live with it but i think it detracts more than adds. I mean, I just cant pictiure a merchent or real estate merchent saying "oh youre willing to pay me the full price? No! how dare you show up with all that money when you're not world famous!"
I dunno... But yeah.. for me its determined by when a player is no longer fun to play in comparison to the alternative.

I've never witnessed any PC being rendered 'unplayable' especially due to bad rep scores. A player throwing up their hands because THEY state the PC is unplayable doesn't mean it actually is. It's just one opinion vs another, yet the fact remains that the PC can be played out until you are blue in the face.

I can identify with this. My first character Avrora was around when the xp and note penalties for the fugue were greater than present. I had almost given up but figured hey I like this character, I worked hard getting her where she is. So my character learned what not to do to get her in the state of frequent fugue.
The lessons learned form her helped me with my other characters.
Rimeth at one time had a string of bad luck. Twice in one month she had two back to back fugues. (4x total)
Marister had three fugues in two weeks. Prior to that he had enough reputation to by a tower. After the third he could only buy a large house. What he had lost on the last fugue made him change his rp line. He has had close calls but now has earned the rep back to buy a tower.
Review the circumstances of your close calls. Where you by yourself? Were you in a group? What were you fighting? What weapons were you using? etc.

well i haven't exactly retired any because of rep i just was commenting on possible scenario's. Like i said... i retire a PC when there simply no longer fun to play... hence why i retired Sila and Sekoleth. both had gone down a line that was just causing me grief (well ore sek than sila but she just had none to rp with left once Huroc left). So i retired them in order to make room for new pc's.
