Has anyone read these other than me? Sure the timeline is diffrent from ours but it does manage to capture Thay and deliver a few punches. Totally enjoyed the books, love being able to rewrite history but long for my own griffon.

Oh yeah, I love the Haunted Lands. Very enjoyable. Can't say I am totally in love with the outcome, but they still give a fantastic look into Thayan society.

I have been considering it, but I already know the outcome of the books and what happens to my beloved Thay, so I'm a bit hesitant. I probably will eventually and cry throughout the entire series...

Well, I finally ordered these and finished them up about a week ago. While I kind of understood what happened before, I never realized how bad things really turned out for Thay. Quite upsetting.
However, I did enjoy the books, regardless. All-in-all the depictions of the battle scenes and layout of Thay were great. And it really gave my imagination a ride trying to visualize all those spell battles between archmages. Scary AND fun!

I do agree with Thayan_Knight though, that the outcome left something to be desired. But Thay as it is currently in our PW's setting is proof that it isn't the first time in its history that the 'bad guys' there won. ;)

My only *real* complaint though...

....starts with the fact that Szass Tam was portrayed as basically invincible and infallible up until literally the last couple chapters of the final book. I mean seriously - all of the other zulkirs and most of the tharchions, against him and his necromancers and a couple other tharchions - and not only does he survive, but still technically 'wins'?!?! Surely even a council of super-intelligent bickering zulkirs (archmages themselves!) would have figured out some way to turn the tide on him and come up with their own tricks.

It got a little frustrating during the multiple, multiple battles where the zulkirs would get the upper hand, only to have [insert one of Tam's so-called magnificent tricks here that no one anticipated] cause them to lose....yet again. It really took some fun out of reading the battles knowing by the end of the second book that every battle the writer took time to portray would go Tam’s way.

Bleh. :P

You do know Szass Tam has had plans in place for many years for anything like that. He has planned tricks, he hsa garnered power. He planned on taking control of Thay once he had enough power and enough support that his civil was wouldnt ruin Thay. Im personally not surprised.

You're kidding? I didn't know that. But now I finally realize that all other zulkirs are really only necessary to provide grossly inept resistance to him, and so that someone...anyone really will fall into every trap he has laid or planned (which are all naturally foolproof, of course).

Of course you aren't. I mean with every book it's always the bad guy who not only destroys the (semi) good guy sworn to revenge against him, but then immediately after wipes out all his remaining enemies in ways they themselves are experts at and are using to try and eliminate him. So why would you be surprised at this, right?

And that is why I will guarantee that the events of the Haunted Lands Trilogy and the unbelievable changes made to Faerun with the 4th edition rules will not occur to our Realm of the Red Wizards. Long live racism, slavery, and evil wizards fighting amongst themselves! Er...in the Thay PW only, of course! :)
