Back to the Future (of Thay)!
#41
I have not yet decided which path we'll take. I will be waiting until the end of the weekend before deciding to give any who haven't weighed in yet (or who want to again) a chance to do so.

Edited: Was what I meant to post earlier, but was having problems with the site.

Ok. So I have been following this thread since its conception. I have read all posts and comment, some more than once. I have been thinking this over and in which way I want to cast my vote. First and foremost I would like to say that I love Thay. I have played on Thay for over a year now (my whole time on NWN). I've tried a few other servers out, but nothing more than a few hours. They're not as compelling to me. So I would play no matter what.

As for going into the future with lore as a guide I can see the positives and negatives about that. On the positives it gives characters a chance to fulfill their most extravagant dreams and give us (players and DMs) opportunities to shape Thay into whatever we wanted it to be. The negatives being: what's the stopping point? How much will change, and how often?

I wouldn't mind a total reboot either. I provides a fresh start for everyone and all will be on an equal playground. Provides the option of dramatically increasing our player base. The only real problem I would have with this option is that since I am unable to play as often as I used to be able to it's going to take me a really long time to get a PC anywhere, level or notoriety wise.

If we went with the total server reboot option maybe it would be possible for long term active players to have maybe one or two PCs stored and be able to bring them back once the server started getting higher level characters again? If that makes any sense, or maybe get some of those compensations later down the road? Just a throwing around a few ideas. Try and make the best of both worlds.

Ultimately it is Thayan's server, and therefore his choice. Regardless of what decision is made I'll still play.

I am prepared to give a majority of the compensation options to our current players that would stick with us after a setting reboot. In looking at the original list in the first post, at first glance these are the compensation options that stick out as ones I'd be willing to offer on a player-by-player basis:

(09-10-2012, 12:04 PM)Thayan Wrote: Long-term and Active Player Compensation Options
-Bonus Gold
-Building Deed
-Special item(s) with properties requested by the PC
-Create a subrace PC
-Create a new PC with a special background, title, or position (Thayan Noble, Autharch, etc)*
-Retire PC (can't be recreated after the reboot) and place in the world as a NPC Questgiver, Faction Contact or Leader, Boss Enemy, etc*
-Create a special building or location (house, tower, faction headquarters, planar pocket, etc) in the world to which your PC will have access. It will be the player's responsibility to create the area and send to Thayan for inclusion in the world*
-Player's Choice (within reason)

*The caveat here is that it cannot conflict with source material though.

The idea about bringing back a current PC once new PCs have reached that level after the reboot is one I had actually been tossing around as well. Let's just say: that idea is definitely on the table as a potential option. But this also would have to be decided on a case-by-case basis.

I'm glad to hear we're thinking along the same lines then. Like I said before though, I'm for whatever you think is best for the server Thayan.

Been following this discussion, seems rather intresting.
I might show up again, if I can find the time now and again.

How high is high? Would there be a span? For instance if high is 10, then players with characters levels 10-13 could possibly return?

In reference to the compensations, I am guessing the player will send you an email about what they envision their character will be an the compensations will be determined at that point? Would any of these compensations apply to a returning character?

I don't know what you mean by your first line, but it is something we can discuss via PM when the time comes to discuss compensation options for active/long-term players. Those options will be determined on a player-by-player basis. I will be doing my best to be a generous as possible yet trying to remain 'fair' to all players so that one player doesn't get the sun, moon, and stars while another gets only a shiny bauble (unless that's what they want).

I have another post coming today regarding the decision about whether or not to reboot the PW setting.

To get right to it: I have made the decision that the Thay PW will begin building up to a complete setting reboot.

First off though, thanks again to everyone for posting here. I appreciate your opinions and ideas, and especially for saying 'no, that is a stupid idea' to my originally presented notion of a time travel reboot option. ;) I am also thankful and pleasantly surprised at the support -or at least general acceptance- of a complete setting reboot from many of those who posted. In the end I think the decision for a complete reboot is healthier, easier, and (most importantly) more fun for everyone involved.

As I have mentioned in previous posts, however, I want to give all our active players a chance to reach their goals for at least one of their main PCs and allow them to play that character having achieved whatever it is they are trying to do (within reason). That is going to be the first priority for the upcoming campaign that will end in a setting reboot. So at this time, the clock will continue to move forward while that happens. The next step after goals have been realized will be a campaign that ends in a setting reboot.

While I don't have a timeline as to how long these two necessary pieces will take, I anticipate it will be at least 3 real-time months before the reboot will occur - possibly longer. Until that time, the in-game time will continue moving forward and storylines can continue to progress as normal.

So - for those of you reading this, if you have a PC with a goal you would like to see become reality, please see this thread for details and how to go about getting that information to me so the DMs can help you get that realized ASAP.

As the setting reboot nears, I will provide further information (probably in that thread) regarding how to go about requesting any type of compensation for a PC after the setting reboot has occurred.

Thanks everyone - and hopefully our ride forward is a wild and fun one. :)

:) having struggled for a long time on thay and only having a level of 9 on my highest level toon.

Having died and lost the quest items and notoriety I think it would be a nice change .. give a chance to start from scratch without loosing all your gear.

I have but two questions:

1. I have two lycans on Thay .. werecats (Khalida Senka) -- would like to rebuild her with opportunity to possibly become a thayan knight. (sorta screwed up on her build a bit needed to do a rebuild to have her meet the requirements) Would like to keep her as a werecat.

Anastashia Shadoe is my other werecat .

2. I wondered if you might be doing anything with vampires again. If so would like to participate in it

Thanks ..

Anyway I vote AYE ... :)

Looking forward to getting a second chance to start from scratch but with a bit of the advantage of keeping the levels worked so long and hard to get :)

A few points of clarification:

Throughout the course of the conversation here, the first post in this thread is no longer valid based on feedback I received from the community in pages 1 through 4. There will be no complicated time-travel reboot. Instead, a complete reboot will occur where all databases and server vaults will be wiped several months from now after we run a number of current-world-ending events in-game.

Also, for compensation options, I will post in this thread once the server reboot nears with information and steps on how our current players can go about requesting something(s) for their new PC(s) after the setting reboot. For now though, if you have existing PCs who have a goal you would like to see realized before the setting reboot, please take a look at that thread and send me the details I requested in it.

In your case Aurora, if you want to have one of your current PCs become a Thayan Knight, or another become a vampire, use that template in the thread to let me know which one(s) so I can get it to our DM team and we can make that happen.
