That’s right! The server for Thay is getting a long-overdue and sorely needed bandwidth upgrade increasing its download speed to 20 Mbps from the current speed of 1.5 Mbps. In the neverending fight against lag, this is a big improvement. Sadly, the upload speed will not be increasing at this time (which will probably have a bigger influence in the fight against server-side lag), but I am assured that ‘it is on the way’.
Unfortunately though, with this upgrade will also come some downtime. The ISP has indicated the switch will occur on Wednesday, October 17 sometime during the day (Central Standard Time). That change in and of itself could result in 30 to 60 minutes of downtime. But, apparently a new modem is needed to handle the connection, and the new modem will not be coming until that day. So it appears that after the ISP flips the switch to provide the better speed, the current modem will no longer function (at least this is what I am told). If this occurs, I will likely not be able to get the modem setup and configured until later that evening.
So long story short: This Wednesday, October 17, Thay will likely experience some downtime. Depending on when the switch to the new speed occurs, it is possible that the server could be unavailable for over 8 hours, but as little as 30 minutes. If it should become unavailable though, I hope have it back up and running with a MUCH faster internet connect by 6:00 PM CST that evening. When I have it up again, I will post here letting everyone know the transition is complete.
