Not as in the Prestige Class, but rather the title.

Is it, or would it in the future be possible to attain this rank in the PW?
I am asking because a friend of mine might be interested, he has not been
able to play much lately but has been attempting to pick up the game again.

Yes indeed, it is planned to be added at some point. Along the lines of joning the Red Wizards, it will be considered more like joining a faction than taking a prestige class. As of my thoughts on it right now, it will be a path that can be taken after joining one of the legions of Thay and rising through the ranks.

Unfortunately, due to implementation difficulties and after other consideration, it will not be possible for one PC to become a Thayan Knight of another PC Red Wizard though. Once implemented, the Thayan Knight will become a protector of a specific NPC Red Wizard (similar to how PCs become Red Wizard Apprentices to a specific Red Wizard).
