Christopher Lee actually met J.R.R. Tolkien and came to know him personally during Tolkien's lifetime. That's why Lee was often consulted by Peter Jackson and the crew during the Hobbit and LotR movies: Because Lee was not only very familiar with the stories but with the creative mind behind them as well, so he had a certain perspective about the Middle Earth universe and its peoples that most people who had merely read Tolkien's works might not grasp.
