Subdual Modes & Information
#1
Doing subdual damage against a NPC or PC means your character is doing non-lethal damage to them. This type of damage can only be done via physical means. If you have a weapon doing bonus magical or elemental damage, only the physical damage done by the weapon counts as subdual damage - the remaining damage is actually lethal and could result in you still killing your target. You also cannot inflict subdual damage through any type of hostile spell.

NPC Subdual Details
Subdual damage done to a NPC is compared against their total hit points. When the amount of subdual damage they have taken surpasses their total number of hit points, they fall unconscious to the ground. They remain unconscious for a length of time linked to the amount of damage it took to subdue them.

Once unconscious, they drop their Pack. Any gold and items they were carrying shows up in the Pack to be taken, if you wish. Furthermore, you may choose to attack them again for a Coup de Grace - a finishing blow that will kill them in one hit.

PC Subdual Details
Be sure to read the Character vs. Character (PvP) rules before engaging in any PC conflict that may, or may not, involve using subdual mode.

While under subdual mode when attacking a PC, normal damage is done until the PC reaches 0 hit points. At that point the PC will become Winded and fall to the ground, unable to move for a short time.

If the PC suffers more damage while Winded, they will eventually Blackout, causing all the gold in their inventory to be dropped to a Player Pack that may be looted. Next, if the PC sustains further damage, they will eventually suffer a Knockout and all readily equipped items are moved to the Player Pack. Finally, if any more damage is inflicted upon them after reaching this stage, they become unconscious and all remaining items in their inventory are moved to the Player Pack.

PCs suffering from some state of subdual will also have temporarily lowered AC and movement rates until they've taken some time to recover.

Activating Sparring Mode will never cause another PC to go beyond the Winded state. Sparring Mode has no affect against NPCs.
