Thayan's Tips of the Day
#1
Quote:Thayan's Tip of the Day: Throughout Thay you will find courtesans in brothels and on streets. Paying for one will grant you XP, especially if you pay for an expensive companion and impress them with your sexual prowess.

(Psst! Don't forget to mention how cheaper prostitutes have a nasty habit of saddling you with a disease! And apparently that one ring which used to grant you immunity to disease (aka. Tristella's "Ring of Whoring +5") got phased out some time back, so...let the buyer beware. ;) )

I like what you've done with your signature, though. Will there be any chance of a "Compilation of Thayan's Tips of the Day" topic in the future, kind of like this one? :)

1. XP is awarded for each new area you explore, including overland areas. Including all overland areas, there is just under 1000 areas in the module. That's a lot of easy XP just sitting out here waiting for you to claim.
2. Almost all non-circular crypts and caverns have one-way secret doors as shortcuts back toward the entrance. Find these and save yourself an exhausting, and possibly dangerous, trip back out.
3. Use the airship Crystal Ball, docked in Eltabbar's Lake Thaylambar district, to quickly transport you to dangerous and distant locations of Thay. But be prepared to pay well for the convenience.
4. PC legionnaire sergeants or higher can imprison others. First use your legion cloak on prison shackles within your tharch. Then any time later you can use the cloak on a person you wish to imprison.
5. Owning a hoard of gold you could swim in isn't necessarily a good thing. Zulkirs may seize a part, thieves may steal a part, and merchants may not pay as well for items from their 'rich' customers.
6. Each adventure location in Thay is targeted to a specific level range of PCs. To get the best rewards out of your adventures, take quests from NPCs who will send you to an area intended for your level.
7. Increasing your appraise skill is important to get the most money out of merchants. It affects the mark up or mark down on a merchant's price, and the maximum amount they'll pay you for an item.
8. On out-of-the-way doorsteps in most Thayan cities, you may find flaming bags of poo. Stomping on one will teach you a valuable lesson (XP). Damn kids.
9. Red Wizards and Thayan Gladiators are the only factions that allow customization of their faction item at Tailor Models.
10. The owner of a property and quickly and easily transfer it, and everything in it, to someone else by using their building key on that person twice within 30 seconds.
11. Always have Belladonna in your pack for a quick and easy way to cure lycanthropy if you have been bitten. Otherwise, one of three spells cast during a certain timeframe can also remove the curse.
12. Go to a temple of your patron god to get a discount on healing, the resurrection fee, and store prices from the priest providing those services.
13. Use caravan masters to send messages by raven to other characters. They will be delivered within minutes if they are logged in, otherwise the recipient will get the message when they next login.
14. Use writing quills to customize anything you own. Not only can they be used for books and letters, but you can also use them on items - or even to alter/update your PC's description.
15. The adventure portal in the Temple of Tymora in Pyarados will send you to an adventure location in or around Thay, while bestowing a powerful blessing from Tymora that lasts for several minutes.
16. Throughout Thay you will find courtesans in brothels and on streets. Paying for one will grant you XP, especially if you pay for an expensive companion and impress them with your sexual prowess.
17. Most special questgivers in Thay give items that cannot be found otherwise, and in several cases may give a reward based on your characters primary (highest level) class.
18. Go to Subrace Availability in the in-game Player Guide to see if your current character has accumulated enough notoriety to permanently grant you access to create a new PC of a rare Thayan subrace.
19. You can turn off the setting that requires a PC to eat, drink, or rest (HTF) through the Player Menu. But if you do so, he or she will not receive the healing benefit that comes from eating or drinking.
20. If you respawn on a caravan or ship journey, you will always be saved by its NPC leaders and awake at your destination. However, the trauma and story of your near death reduce your XP and notoriety.
21. If your PC gets enslaved, he or she can be purchased by another PC, or try to escape the slave pens and live as an escaped slave in the Sunrise Mountains, or choose to become a Thayan Gladiator.
22. To encourage teamwork and interaction to complete quests, upon successfully completing a quest, all nearby party members of the main PC quester will each receive half of that person's reward XP.
23. Permanent immunity items are rare and often difficult to come by. Instead, use spells or complete special quests for unique items that can give you these immunities for a time.
24. PCs on the merchant or mercenary Path to Power may sell goods to Merchant Masters, possess twice as much gold before risking theft or zulkir seizure, and receive a 50% discount on building deeds.
25. High Thay is restricted to only Red Wizards, Thayan Knights, and High Thay legionnaires. However, as with most rules of Thay, this one can be broken by a smooth talker or those with coin for a bribe.
26. Keys exist to restricted areas such as castle walls and gatehouses, tharchion or zulkir chambers, etc. If you feel your PC deserves one, see a DM to request an event be run in which one can be awarded.
27. 'Life' as an undead PC is difficult. Beside their natural limitations; undead hunters may stalk them, and with a high ECL their encounters will be more difficult and they will gain XP less quickly.
28. Travelling at night in Thay can be dangerous. Thugs roam the alleys and backstreets of larger cities, while along roads and in the countryside bandits and monsters come out in greater numbers.
29. Turn the tables on nosey wizards! For the right price, or ‘the good of the realm’, anyone can use the scrying devices in the Palace of Crystals of northwest Eltabbar.
30. Doors that are opened only with a faction item are magically warded, and may destroy the item if the person opening the door with it is not a true member of the faction.
31. Enslaved PCs may escape the Slave Pens of Thay and survive among other escaped slaves in the Sunrise Mountains. There they have a fortified refuge, stables, a merchant, and even a healer.
32. If an item weighs more than 3 pounds or it can't easily fit into your pocket, you will not be able to steal it. This includes when trying to recover an item from a NPC as part of a retrieval quest.
33. Being a holy class, notorious, human, charismatic, and of similar alignment and favorable reputation to a NPC all improve the chance they will favorably view your god if you talk to them about it.
34. Type !dispel to provide a list of self-cast spells on your PC. Then/Or type !dispel 999 to dispel a specific effect, where 999 is the spell ID provided from the !dispel command.
35. Tired of worrying if you got infected by a lycan's bite? Consider playing a Paladin. Their Divine Health ability grants them immunity to the lycanthropy disease.
36. Rangers can determine the number and location of nearby creatures via the Tracking option in the Player Menu. This ability can be used at will, but is less effective in 'civilized' areas.
37. If you want a problem resolved, take the time to provide me the details and information I need to fix it.
38. The Water Breathing spell is invaluable for underwater adventuring, but in addition it will also protect you from drown spells or attacks - like those performed by Water Elementals.

Maybe this could be that topic if someone wants to edit the first post to continually add to it? ;) There is also a Tips for Adventuring in Thay thread that was updated almost two years ago, but could be pages and pages and pages more if anyone wants to add to it.

Here have been all my tips of the day so far for use wherever someone might want to list/categorize them:

12 should be amended, the healing and resurrection discount are still in I think, but temple stores all charge everyone the same for bandages and scrolls I've noticed.
Mirella Locke - Callisto

Olukon Thrune - Bookworm priest

Hargrid Beld - Paladin of Hoar

Lyta Csndrila - Fire Woman(On hold)

I've noticed that too; there may be discounts to the priest's services if you have the same patron god, but bandages, scrolls and potions still cost the same no matter where you go. As I recall, when I was getting Tristella promoted up through the ranks of Loviatar's Manor, she didn't get discounts on the Manor's bandages and such until she was Lay Person rank, and the discount got a little bit bigger when she was promoted from Lay Person to Clergy Initiate. I'll see if the same holds true once I get Corella promoted to Lay Person or higher in Leira's temple.

If I wasn't already sitting on the fence between going Mercenary/Merchant or holding out for Red Wizard with Wyren, I might try to get her promoted up through the Temple of Mystra too...assuming that I can ever find it, that is. (I might just go the Merchant route, though; a Mystran Red Wizard would be playing a very dangerous game. Not that I don't like a good challenge now and then, mind you.... Cool )

Updated.

(And I really need to find my notepad and get back to jotting down all of the special questgivers. It's hard to keep up with them all...who to go to for what, which ones to avoid, and so on. Also, the Flame Twin rocks and I should go get that one next. :) )

Ha your right, I was about to post this, I was wondering if everyone was finding it to be the case or just me? So is this a bug that has slipped through the net or was it only ever meant to be discounted temple services?

There does seem to be a discount on the services (read: spells cast on you by the temple's priest or priestess). Normally, a priest charges a hundred or two for the Lesser Restoration spell to repair damaged Abilities. But Zelis is in the Temple of Sune getting her Wisdom patched back up after a nasty encounter with a meerlock (and Ao knows she needs what little Wisdom she has), and the priestess is charging here a measly 45 Talons for that. And that's just for a noncommitted believer in Sune; Corella gets similar discounts at the Temple of Leira (where she's an Initiate) and, if my previous experiences with Tristella rising through the ranks of Loviatar's Manor hold true, Corella's discounts will grow bigger as she gains rank in Leira's temple as well.

The goods for sale aren't discounted for everyone, though; you have to be ranking clergy before that temple will knock a little off the price. By the time her tale came to a close, Tristella was getting a good 30% or so off the Manor's potions, bandages and such.
