Why Thay?
#1
I have been playing online NWN for almost 10 years now. I looked at my start date here and notice I am coming up on four years yet it seems longer.
It has not been all that smooth as feathers got ruffled on both sides over the years. :)

Although Thayan has graciously added things to improve player enjoyment, even if he did not add more the world still lives and breathes. Other places well are more stagnent and usually takes and act of congress to try and change anything.

During the real time of troubles (aka the crash) on a facebook site dedciated to NWN some poeple who had played on Thay but no longer hoped it would come back as they said it is one of the most complete worlds.

The reason I stay is because although it is a land of sex and drugs and slavery, ironically it is one of the more relaxing places to play.

It caters to all types of rp and player moods. You do not need to depend on dms to get you though the place. It is a great place for a dm to be a dm as they have more time to be a player inbetween.

You had a crappy day at work and you do not feel like interacting you can off somewhere and kill things and you are not limited by areas.

You can send ravens to try and get adventuring parties together.

Even if it is something small your characters actions can influence the world and you are a part of its history.

Yes there are certain, what is the term, canons that must be followed but there are enough loopholes to make play here more personal.

Kudos again to Thayan and others who helped in this world's development.

Thay is great. It is where being good feels naughty and wrong. :3

Thanks Thayan and team for the server!

Little things mean a lot. Like how this server (alone, it would seem) gives you XP for killing summons, thus encouraging players to chew through a wizard's summoned pets instead of running around them and going right for the wizard's jugular. And I often do just that. Corella has been known to stand there and wait while a heucuva summons one shadow after the next, so Corella can chop down one shadow after the next (with her NEP running, of course). Because screw you and your pets, heucuvas! :P

So good call on that feature, Thayan. Kudos for that and everything else. :)

It's funny that you post this today Ani, just last night I went to bed (too late again after staying up and playing here) and was thinking about posting a thank you to Thayan as well. :)

I've taken my breaks from Thay, but mostly to play other games or because of life, but I keep coming back here because there's no other game and no other NWN server that I've found that is as great as this one. The scripting is simply incredible and every time I come back here after a break I'm surprised and pleased by the new things that have been added. From being able to send messages or gather a group via raven, the arenas, new & dangerous creatures, new static quests, the fountains in Redhall, and more things I'm sure I haven't run into yet.

This is by far the best server I've played on because of the great players, the active and fun DMs and the many contributors to Thay. I appreciate all you people but the biggest thanks goes to Thayan for keeping this world up and running, for continually adding to it, and for being so very open to community suggestions while still maintaining a solid vision for his world and a firm guiding hand in running the world and the forums. Thank you! Heart

Yeah, it's definitely the best NWN world out there.

I agree with everything that has been said so far.

Great thanks to Thayan and the team for making such a 'liveable' world.

Somewhere to kill, relax, interact or just stay on your own if you don't feel like socialising.

Thay has something for everyone. :D

Seconded. I'm so glad Thayan choose Thay, one of the coolest of all the regions in FR.

I never enjoyed the NWN singleplayer game, but got it a couple years ago as part of GOG's D&D bundle. On the GOG forums, someone had posted an ad for Thay, and here I am.

During the Time of Troubles I tried different PWs but I just didn't enjoy them as much, and the whole time I was thinking "Man, this would be better if it had Thay's system." The Notoriety system, players awarding XP for RP, the housing system, the general "mid-fantasy" feel (there was just something so... bizarre about creating a character on a server and seeing a level 40 Half-Dragon Wizard/Cleric/Pale Master walk by).

The random quest system is really cool, too. At first it felt kind of grind-y, but once you reach a certain point it begins to feel more, I don't know, organic? Like I was actually a person in a world doing work to try and get some cash and build up my rep, instead of going through some questline that everyone else had already been through (which, on top of feeling a bit odd, was really tough to RP. "I've been tasked with recovering the stolen artifact from the temple." "Ah, yes, I recovered that stolen artifact last week myself." "I just did the same not too long ago!" How many times is this artifact getting stolen?).

The server also finds a nice balance between having enough rules that people's fun is never disrupted, but not so many that it feels restrictive. Some of the other servers out there, they'll either be chaotic or unreasonably regulated. Of course, part of that, I think, is the community, too. Most of the people around here I can't imagine griefing or cheating. Good RPers, too. Usually something interesting going on, and very few Mary Sue-type characters (which is my personal pet peeve). DMs contribute to that a lot, too. Hosting great events and campaigns.

Anyway, I'm not trying to talk down on other servers. They're doing some really cool stuff, too. They just don't align with my personal tastes as much as Thay does.

As for Thay itself, before I came here I didn't know anything about it aside from it being "That place Edwin was from." It's a really cool setting, and I enjoy it a lot, but it's really the mechanics and the community that make it, for me.

Anyway, that's really just a long-winded way of saying Thay is the bomb and huge thank you to Thayan and co for making all of this happen and continue to happen.

Thank you everyone for your kind words, but especially for being a part of the Thayan community that gives it the feel it has which is a major driver in making it a place many people enjoy.
