Thayan Politics
#1
Hey there,

I was curious if anybody could tell me how politics are generally handled in Thay; how does one take a public office, how does one rise up and is it possible for characters to hold such offices or if it's restricted to nobility?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

If a Zulkir dies the wizards from that school elect who will be the next Zulkir. The Zulkirs council appoints which individuals will be Tharchions, and then in turn Tharchions divide their work load by appointing Autharches for various tasks (treasurer, public works, etc.)

When Tharchions die the Zulkirs usually makes promising military leader within that tharch the next Tharchion.

Once someone is appointed the position of Tharchion or Autharch they are considered nobility.

I believe however, if you are a half breed, aka human/elf, etc. It is rare that you would even be concidered for the above positions and because your non-human blood "pollutes" human you can never recieve the title of Lord or Lady.

Yeah... the Thayan elite is extremely racist: it's extremely challenging for non-Mulani humans to ever do this, and nigh-on impossible for non-humans.

Unless we talk about 4E. Haha, just kidding. In all serious though I doubt any demi-human would be allowed into office.

Keep in mind, however, that... while it may be hard to arrange.. anyone can arrange to get some dirt on an autharch, tharchion... or even conceivably a zulkir.. and thereby achieve some political leverage and power.

Of course... the power of the leverage depends on the availability of counterposing centers of power to use as leverage... just saying.
