Human female, born to a wizard family in Waterdeep where her mother had been an apprentice of Khelben Arunsun. Was admitted to Blackstaff Tower several times with her mother where Laeral Silverhand made a deep and lasting impression on her.
Ordinary and happy childhood, somewhat marred by her lack of proficiency in channelling the Weave in wizardly fashion despite being thoroughly schooled in its theory and displaying an intuitive grasp of its theory and workings. Was found to have a natural affinity for lore and passion for collecting, collating, and cross-referencing knowledge, and developed an affinity for the teachings of Oghma. Developed a clerical disposition in her teens along with a fiery temper, and prevailed upon her parents to allow her to learn the martial arts.
Was preparing to enter clerical training at the church of Oghma and was travelling there with a group of friends when they were was ambushed. Of those ambushed only Maria and sent to Thay by mysterious benefactors; the rest being either killed in the ambush or smuggled to Thay as slaves.
Was apt to despair when she arrived and was helped for a few months by Aviel Darkblood, who prevailed upon those she could to aid and protect Maria. Was shaken by Aviel’s sudden disappearance after being outlawed and was thrown into an existential crisis as a result. Emerged with a new calm resolve and was seen to aid the cause of Oghma. Found an outlet for her martial training in a career of crypt cleansing.
